mjzee Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 I have no use for them. I don't read Japanese. They make it difficult to file away the CD. They crease easily. Yet before I throw one away, I feel a sharp pang of regret. Please advise. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Can you provide a picture of you throwing one away? Then we might be able to comment. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 You seem to treasure it. Does not look like disposal at all. Are you toying with us? Quote
xybert Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Similar to throwing away those cardboard sleeves that ECM CDs come with: they're pointless but you feel like they're part of the package. Obi strips at least look cool. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Just remembered I have a stack of JRVG obis in the drawer. Anyone want them? Quote
BeBop Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Seems like some people selling CDs make a big deal out of 'em: "Includes OBI strip!" Quote
CJ Shearn Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I keep mine in a plastic container Quote
mjzee Posted October 19, 2013 Author Report Posted October 19, 2013 Just remembered I have a stack of JRVG obis in the drawer. Anyone want them? So you didn't throw them out either, didja? Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Only collector nerds care about OBIs; which is why I keep all mine...the Japanese seem to really treasure them as I've seen Japanese lps with OBIs sell for nearly double the amounts that the same lps without OBIs do. It is a bit strange. Quote
JSngry Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I just put them inside the front cover. They usually fit on the diagonal, and I don't read liner notes too much more than once or twice, so..no problem. Out of sight, out of mind, and out of the way. But still in there for a strike. Remember also as well - You can always get rid of what you already have, but vice-versa is quite the opposite. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 When I buy CDs I throw out all surplus packaging - tend to keep the inner sleeve and the inlay too if that's the only source of track/musician info. Slot it in a PVC sleeve. Doesn't half save space. A lot of the packaging reminds me of: Quote
erwbol Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 The Mad Dogs packaging must have made no difference to you. CDs in plastic sleeve. Fold the LP sized liners notes down to a small square and put it with the CDs. Jolly good. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I thought the Mad Dogs packaging bonkers. All got put in 5 PVC jackets. I do like an insert with the front sleeve and the track/musician details so I make one (as I mainly download I'm used to that). I can see the appeal of nice packaging - I've plenty of boxes stuffed with booklets etc. I just decided a few years back that even with the useful stuff - liner notes, essays about the music etc - it was rare I read them more than once. Things like the Mosaic booklets are tremendous but an awful lot of what you get elsewhere is fluff, there to make the package seem grander. What I really ought to do is migrate to pure streaming. But I do like those front cover pictures! Quote
erwbol Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) When I started collecting I threw out a number of DIW David Murray OBIs. What was I thinking? I love the OBIs. I always feel a bit let down when a second hand Japanese CD doesn't include one. The BN Works ones are really nice reproducing part of the front artwork. When a BN Works OBI is slightly creased, I always feel a tiny bit sad for the little guy, even if the CD & artwork are near mint. Edited October 19, 2013 by erwbol Quote
erwbol Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Now here's a peculiar OBI I wouldn't want to be without. Most of the info on the OBI is not reproduced on the spartan packaging. Quote
erwbol Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 And to answer the original poster's question: "Why do I feel funny when I throw out an OBI strip?" "If you strike me down now I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." - Obi Wan Kenobi Quote
JohnS Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I could never bring myself to discard an obi. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) I stick them on the inside of the plastic case. OBI fetishism rules.. Maybe inspired by this?.. Edited October 19, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
mikeweil Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 Seems like some people selling CDs make a big deal out of 'em: "Includes OBI strip!" Exactly! They make one feel like the CD is worh less without the OBI - rather superficial.I just keep them inside tmhe booklet in case I re-sell some day ... Quote
ArtSalt Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 But it always tells guests that you are serious connoisseur of the Japanese art of quality remastering. It gives the right impression, at least to those who dig these kind of things. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I *especially* need the OBI for Blues in Trinity. Chuck? There's one or two others I need but it is BiT that stands out in my mind. Truth is, it's been driving me a bit crazy... Quote

Obi strips at least look cool. I always get rid of the cardboard cases on ECM's, but I keep the OBI's behind the tray card *not* cause I give two hoots about them, but if anybody would end up with any of my discs at some point the future, maybe they'd want them or something. Eric Posted October 19, 2013 Report Posted October 19, 2013 I alway pitch them. I find it cathartic Quote
