Hardbopjazz Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Here are the 10 I listen to the most. I would have put more. If there are others just put them in a response. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Adam's Apple - it has something of many different styles, is an excellent showcase for his composing and there is no other horn disctracting the listener from his great playing. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I think more and more I like the VeeJay work as much as the Blue Note, but I chose Night Dreamer. I listen to less and less Wayne, but this one I listen to most often the last few years. Love the JRVG. Quote
JSngry Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Still a minority on this, but for me it's ODYSSEY OF ISKA. Quote
Guy Berger Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I have a bias toward the quartet sessions that I just can't help, so I voted for Et cetera. Adam's Apple and Ju Ju would be second and third, though I don't know in what order. Quote
Noj Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Night Dreamer at this point, though I've yet to hear a few of the other candidates, including the ones Jim and Guy chose... Quote
Peter Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 His compositions and solos for the 1960 Art Blakey recordings are outstanding. Quote
John B Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 There is no "best," but I voted for Ju Ju as a sentimental favorite. It was the first album of his as a leader that I ever heard and it blew me away. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Etc is just brilliant. It's the one I listen to most often. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 There are lots of sides to Shorter at different times, but I'll never get over the bizarre deadpan humor of his work on "Introducing Wayne Shorter" and "Kelly Great" (both VeeJay) -- not only because it's terrific but also because it's pretty much unique ("pretty much" because you could make a case that there's some relationship between this side of early Shorter and the serio-comic late '50s Rollins, even though the results sound very different). Quote
Joe G Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Help me out here; what's the album from the 70's with the Brazilian musicians (Milton Nascimento, I think)? The title escapes me... I heard a bit of it on a radio show a couple years ago, but still haven't tracked down a copy. Sounded good to me at the time--what do you guys think? Quote
relyles Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Not sure that I can pick a favorite recording, but I must point out that his current quartet is playing some stuff live that IMO is equal to anything he has done throughout his carrer. Neither of the recordings featuring this group really display just how great the band is. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 In general, I'm not necesssarily wild about his stuff. My favourite playing of his would be on the title track to Blakey's 'Free for All', although I'm not sure that that's especially typical? Of those I know in the list, however, I think it's 'Night Dreamer' for me! Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 (edited) NATIVE DANCER. Love it! That's the only Shorter record after the Blue Notes that I really dig! Edited February 10, 2004 by mikeweil Quote
RDK Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Oddly enough, I chose Adam's Apple - odd because it's the only one I don't yet have on CD. Yet it's my favorite. Go figure... Quote
GregK Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I voted for JuJu, but I really like Footprints Live. I've listened to that quite a bit since I saw him with that same quartet 2 years ago. It may not be his best but I think it ranks right up there close to the best Quote
Morganized Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I would have to cast my vote for Adam's Apple but I am a huge Shorter fan and don't even ask which one comes in second because I don't know if I could narrow it down that close. Love ETC., Schizo., Night Dreamer, the Vee Jays, Footprints, ... You get the drift. Wayne is fantastic. Had the opportunity to see him live a couple of years ago. Best show I have ever seen. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 (edited) I love Wayne Shorter and it's so hard to pick a favorite. I selected "Adam's Apple," which is a masterpiece. I love most of the others. "Odyssey of Iska" your favorite, huh Jim? Edited February 11, 2004 by connoisseur series500 Quote
rockefeller center Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 "Odyssey Of Iska" is beautiful. Quote
JSngry Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 "Odyssey of Iska" your favorite, huh Jim? Yeah, it is. There's a "operatic" (or some such) quality to both Wayne's playing (he's SINGING on his horns!) and the intereaction w/the band and the programmatic nature of the music that really appeals to me (the concept and its execution) and reaches (the "singing" quality of Wayne's playing) me. Not a "popular" choice, obviously, and certainly not an obviously "jazz" album. but, yeah, it is my favorite Wayne album. But hell, I like'em all for different reasons. I guess if I was to go for the "traditional" choices, it would be JUJU. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 (edited) I did own "Iska" once but didn't keep it. I do remember some beautiful playing, but the style seemed too dated. It just wasn't my thing, but then my tastes in jazz are more narrow and shallow than Jim's. (No irony meant there, despite the winkie; I hold no pretences as far as being a great judge of jazz or music in general.) Edited February 11, 2004 by connoisseur series500 Quote
BruceH Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Wayning Moments. For BN's I would have picked Speak No Evil, but we weren't allowed to vote for more than one. Damnit. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Etc is just brilliant. It's the one I listen to most often. Me too. Of course, several other Shorter dates are brilliant too. But I also listed to "Etc." quite a bit more than any other Shorter disc. Quote
brownie Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I voted for 'Night Dreamer'. Still my favorite Shorter. But I must say I don't play the Wayne Shorter albums that much lately. Much prefer hearing him when he was blowing with the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers or with the Miles Davis quintet. That's the Shorter I love! Quote
