bertrand Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Slapping 5 stars on everything is inane, but he just comes off as a real jerk. Bertrand. Quote
ejp626 Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 I thought it was very amusing, and I agree with him in a lot of his assessments, including recent Wayne Shorter recordings. I guess it depends on where you stand on "progress" in jazz. And whether the young lions of today should be treated with kid gloves. Quote
paul secor Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 I don't have any problem with what he said. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 I don't have any problem with what he said.I don't either. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 The older I get the more I feel about the music like he does. I can pretty much go along with much of what he said about the recordings played to him. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 In addition to the crankiness, he makes some specific musical points. OTOH, having listened to a snippet of that Willie Jones III "I Get a Kick Out of You" Max Roach tribute track on Amazon (all I could find), it sounded pretty good to me -- in fact, the sheer speed burned away a lot of the posing in front of a mirror quality I tend to get from such retro projects. And that Warren Wolf track that Tootie liked I found to be a snooze. He sure was right about that flashy-empty Wynton solo though, IMO. Quote
JohnS Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 The older I get the more I feel about the music like he does. I can pretty much go along with much of what he said about the recordings played to him. Me too I'm afraid. Quote
fasstrack Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 I don't have any problem with what he said. Me either. Just straight shooting from a guy who's heard a lot in his years. Quote
JSngry Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 At least we had an excuse. We were high, and we thought the audience was high. That should go directly into the Down Beat Blindfold Test Hall Of Fame. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 Almost as entertaining as the Miles blindfold tests ! Quote
xybert Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 Nice read. It's interesting how some artists can criticise the music of other artists and it comes off all good, where as when other artists are critical of other artists it strikes a nerve. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Age and history is/are part of the reason. Quote
