brownie Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Has anybody heard any of these reissues yet? http://acerecords.co.uk/boplicity-label Are they as good as it says? Quote
king ubu Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 can't say anything, but there's been a previous thread: Quote

Head Man Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 Latest batch of Boplicity reissues up for pre-order at Ace Records: http://acerecords.co.uk/a-time-in-my-life http://acerecords.co.uk/blue-mitchell-2 http://acerecords.co.uk/hadley-caliman-1 http://acerecords.co.uk/75--get-outa-my-way Anyone got any comments on them...? jazzbo Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I know that the Caliman is a good one. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I've got the Houston Person albums on LP. Can't say I'd recommend them to anyone who wasn't a raving fan like me. But his one hit single - 'Disco sax' is included in 'Get outa my way'. So there. The Blue Mitchell is one of his very best albums - Jimmy Forrest and Walter Bishop are on it. Nuff sed? MG Quote
felser Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I picked up the Harold Land and Roy Haynes reissues from the last batch, and am well-pleased with them. I'll plan to pick up the Hadley Caliman from this upcoming batch. Quote
gmonahan Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 It's always nice to see any of Sarah Vaughan's Mainstream material back in print. The (now defunct) Jazz Heritage Society reissued a lot of it years ago. That's how I got this one. gregmo Quote
Eric Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 BIG for the Mitchell and Caliman. Quote

Head Man Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 BIG for the Mitchell and Caliman. Thanks, guys... those are the two I've decided to go for. Quote

Thanks Very much of it's time (1971), spiritual overtones, electric piano and bass. It's a very good, not great, album. Spectacular front line (Hannibal Peterson, George Adams) is underutilized. A few extra nods towards being a drummer-led date. If that era is magical for you (it is for me), you'll definitely want it. If not, you can probably safely pass. Be sure to get the Harold Land, which is the group he co-led with Bobby Hutcherson. Quote
colinmce Posted November 21, 2014 Report Posted November 21, 2014 Is the Mitchell electrified? Consider it a personal deficiency, but I just never cottoned to the electric bass & keyboard sound so a great deal of 70s jazz just doesn't land with me. Quote

Maybe an electric keyboard here and there, but largely acoustic. You can preview the songs on iTunes (or Amazon?). Edited November 21, 2014 by Eric Quote

That Hutcherson/Land combination was special. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 28, 2014 Report Posted November 28, 2014 I have two other digital versions of this and the new Boplicity sounds head and shoulders above them. The only version that sounds similarly wonderful is my mono Contact lp. This is a favorite work and I'm very happy wth this new reissue. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) Picked up the Caliman recently. I enjoy it, but am not blown away. He plays solid tenor on the set, but he's not really searching...I prefer his flute playing on the album which is deep and soulful. I just received "Gratitude" in the mail and feel it is a much stronger effort. Hadley Caliman was a great reedman. Also - there is an unidentified trumpet on the recording. Edited December 11, 2014 by LarryCurleyMoe Quote
Niko Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 just noticed the trumpet playing as well, and also that the timings didn't match... there's an explanation on discogs: The current "reissue" couples Side A of Hadley Caliman with Side A of Iapetus, his second mainstream album, thus leaving out half of the self-titled album https://www.discogs.com/de/Hadley-Caliman-Hadley-Caliman/release/6403264 While I admit that I'd have preferred a reissue of Iapetus to a reissue of Hadley Caliman, I am nevertheless rather pissed - especially since this is apparently just an error... king ubu Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 An unbelievably dumb error, too! Thanks for the alert. Time to invade Britain again, it might soon be too late (I heard they try to unhinge the whole island and shift it to Panama, it's safer there, no yurpeens around ) Quote
