jazzbo Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Got in Unity and Super Nova. Will try to listen tomorrow! Quote
Justin V Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 (edited) I'm patiently waiting for Unity, Brown Sugar, Speak No Evil and (the non-BN) Tennessee Firebird to arrive. Edited October 28, 2014 by Justin V Quote
JohnS Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Received Unity this morning from cd Japan. Unfortunately no opportunity to spin it today. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Spun Supernova. Very nice. Though I'll state that I prefer the RVG by a bit, it's meatier which helps this session. Quote
RiRiIII Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) Spun Supernova. Very nice. Though I'll state that I prefer the RVG by a bit, it's meatier which helps this session. I thought that we had the McMaster remaster only (out of japan). Edited October 29, 2014 by Alexandros Quote
jazzbo Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) No, there's a Japanese RVG edition. It's very good imo. TOCJ-7200. I've listened to the Unity release. Sound is quite good. The alternates . . . as I remember them they're not as essential for me as others seem to think they are but then I'm not a HUGE fan of Unity. Edited October 29, 2014 by jazzbo Quote
david weiss Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 I just listened to Free For All. The bonus track, an alternate of Free for All is OK, certainly not close to the original by any means but the Freddie Hubbard solo is ridiculous and to me worth the price of admission. It's nice to see the Unity alternates finally see the light of day, I've always loved them. I also received Hank Mobley "Workout" (bonus tracks are two takes of "Three Coins in the Fountain") and Stanley Turrentine "Hustlin'" (bonus track is an alternate take of "Trouble (No. 2)") which I haven't gotten to yet. It's not easy to keep up with the bonus track issues. Quote

romualdo Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Does anyone know what the extra title on Jimmy Smith's "Midnight Special +1" is The RVG of this didn't contain extra material - I know the titles were from two sessions that also yielded the LP "Back At The Chicken Shack" Quote

erwbol Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 The new non-SHM low priced edition of Out To Lunch does not have the two alternate takes according to hmv.co.jp. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 This new version of Sweet Honey Bee sounds wonderful. Doesn't sound like an lp transfer if it is. Quote
erwbol Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Why would it be a needle-drop? Did the tapes go missing? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Previous US one was a needle-drop I believe, they didn't seem to have tapes at the time. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Tom Evered once confirmed that the master tapes were lost. Judging from what I hear, I think the previous "Blue Note Works" TOCJ reissue was a vinyl transfer too, albeit better done than the US Rare Grooves edition. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 I'll agree that the Blue Note Works cd sounds like a needle-drop. I'd be interested in the opinions of others on this 75th Anniversary edition. Sounds like it is tape sourced to me, regardless I think it sounds great. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 Ugh there's at least 12 in that batch I want despite having them in different pressings(original, King, etc)... Quote
David Ayers Posted January 9, 2015 Author Report Posted January 9, 2015 Thanks for posting that list. While I am certainly not going to "do" Blue Note all over again, it is hard to resist dabbling in these SHMs. If only they had had these when I was growing up . Not sure which of these have new extra tracks. Someone will work it out though. The Three Sounds releases evidently do, though a lot of Sounds tracks were anthologised in different ways before so these copious-seeming extras may be repeats, and in any case they would be a pretty low priority. Blues in Trinity extras? Non on my JRVG, but I don't have the Mosaic. True Blue? Can't remember. Anything else?Weirdly, no Jimmy Smith, but the Pattons are promising sound-wise. Organ comes off well in these SHMs. Quote
