ejp626 Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 I do plan to get this in 2014 -- but am I imagining that it could have been compressed into 1 or even 2 fewer discs? Not sure I'm complaining -- as ultimately one of the very few things I *dislike* about Mosaic sets is (some) albums/sessions being spread across multiple discs -- but that thought did occur to me looking over the discography. I'm sure my wallet will hate the extra expense, but ultimtely I won't care about that aspect (after the bill's done been paid), and will probably be greatful for it ever thereafter. That was my impression. Some of the sessions are on the short side.I'm leaning towards getting this, but more like 2015. It is nowhere near the top of my list. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 My idea is that this is like several other earlier sets (and perhaps a later one, the Shaw) a case where the estate dictated potential lists of the discs. I remember the Cole set saying that the estate's idea of a cd was 60 minutes and Mosaic wasn't to go much beyond that, and as a result that large set might have been a bit smaller. Quote
felser Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 The Jordan could have been one disc shorter without splitting albums across CD's. I'm thilled to get it either way - the bigger loss to me is not including 'Reasons in Tonality', but I understand why it's not there. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 19, 2013 Report Posted November 19, 2013 Got my set last night. Only listened to one disc, but the mastering is excellent (even if the original recordings are nothing special). And the booklet has been teaching me much about Jordan and his career that I just did not know. Quote
Ed S Posted January 4, 2014 Report Posted January 4, 2014 I got this one as a Christmas gift and am giving it my first listen tonight. I've made it through the first two discs and am really liking it. I'm doing other things as I listen, so I have not rally sat down with the booklet and concentrated on the music, but I like what I've heard thus far. Given the nature of this set, I'm going to make sure I read the booklet as I proceed through the set. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 (edited) My set arrived - number 1339 so looks like it's selling well. Listening to CD1 to me has that very definite vibe, as with Prestige sessions of the period, of straightened times coming in for modern jazz in general but 'we're not going to go down without a fight'. Amazing how much like Booker Little Don Cherry sounds on some of the leads. Edited June 30, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
