gmonahan Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 Nothing on the Mosaic Records website yet. I do hope this doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. The Armstrong live set box isn't there either. I wouldn't worry. I just think Mosaic has gotten a lot more conservative about what they post on their Upcoming Releases page. gregmo Quote
felser Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 Really wish they would include 'Reasons in Tonality', but I know getting the rights on much of that Strata-East material is problematic. Quote
bogdan101 Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 Really wish they would include 'Reasons in Tonality', but I know getting the rights on much of that Strata-East material is problematic. Excuse my ignorance here, but why is it in general so hard to get rights to reissue material that is physically rotting somewhere in a vault? Is it artists estates asking for unrealistic sums of money? Is it the labels? Just curious. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 (edited) Strata-East wasn't really a label in the regular sense. Many/most of the titles were owned by the artist(s) so it isn't like the rights (and masters) live in one location. The package being discussed here is made of materials owned by Clifford Jordan. As a matter of fact, Clifford offered this group of masters to me around 1980. I couldn't afford it. Edited September 29, 2013 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 Hey Chuck, do you have any favorite(s) from among the dates that will be represented on this new set? -- the subject of this entire thread? I only have the two Jordan leader-dates, and don't think I've ever heard any of the others (that I recall). Thanks in advance. Quote
marcello Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 "Reasons In Tonality" is a Keno Duke session ( w/Jordan). It's quite good. I have no idea what became of him. Date: February 13, 1972Location: Village Vanguard, New York CityLabel: Strata-East Keno Duke (ldr), George Coleman, Clifford Jordan (ts), Julius Watkins (frh), Harold Mabern, Jr. (p), Larry Ridley (b), Keno Duke (d) a. a-01 Reasons In Tonality - 24:00 b. b-01 3 - M. B. - 22:45 Both titles on: Strata-East LP 12": SES 1972-2 — Reasons In Tonality (1972) Group known as Jazz Contemporaries - a. credited to Watkins, b. credited to Duke. Unsure if this is composer credit or leadership. Quote

miles65 Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 This set is up for pre order. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=256-MD-CD release early November. Quote
king ubu Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 thanks ... so, no alternates/outtakes? Quote
ejp626 Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 So one unissued session (It features the 6 outstanding unreleased tracks, by Ed Blackwell with a drum ensemble and a quartet featuring Don Cherry) but apparently no alt. takes.Am I missing something? It seems like this would fit onto 5 CDs easily. If they are going for an original album approach, then we might at least get the cover art... Quote
tranemonk Posted October 16, 2013 Report Posted October 16, 2013 Ordered... I could probably do without the Pharaoh Sanders set.. but I'm willing to give this one a try.... Quote
Ed S Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 I've been purchasing older Mosaic sets before they go OOP, so I'll eventually get around to this one. This particular set represents, to me, the great potential Mosaic has for releases going forward. Seems like a great concept. Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 Listened to the audio clips and liked most of what I heard (though that Blackwell drum date not so much), so I might have to change my mind about this set. Quote
felser Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 Ordered... I could probably do without the Pharaoh Sanders set.. but I'm willing to give this one a try.... I actually like the Sanders quite a bit. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 (edited) Glass Bead Games sits outside the period of the rest of the box. GBG and Izipho Zam were easily and cheaply available on CD for years. GBG is on Spotify for anyone who wants to audit before purchase. I can't stand GBG myself and sold it a long time ago. That might just be me. Same for Izipho Zam. Links to GBG and the Wilbur Ware album Clifford Jordan Quartet – Glass Bead Games Wilbur Ware – Wilbur Ware Super Bass Other titles seem not to be on spotters. Head Man Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 Apart from the Ed Blackwell & Pharoah Sanders sessions I already have all of this. Reluctantly I think I'll give it a miss. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 I didn't realize the Ware was the one he released recently. It makes no sense to include it. When big companies do this they are accused of a rip-off. And compare the cost of this set to anything from BS/SN. For collectors, I guess. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 (edited) I've enjoyed my reissues of Glass Bead Games and In the World, while I'm looking forward to this set. BTW, my Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald Mosaic set arrived yesterday, #12, the lowest number I've ever received, aside from the "Promo" copies I've gotten at times. Stefan Wood Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 Put in an order for this set. Finally! Quote
bogdan101 Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Got the e-mail about it yesterday, probably going to order soon. Did you notice at the bottom something saying "this email was sent to .... by Universal Music Group"? Also landed in my spam box because it came from mosaic@capitol.umusic-mail.com. Quote
David Ayers Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Mosaic was half-owned by Capitol EMI and that part of EMI is now owned by Universal. Those megacorps, eh? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 I do plan to get this in 2014 -- but am I imagining that it could have been compressed into 1 or even 2 fewer discs? Not sure I'm complaining -- as ultimately one of the very few things I *dislike* about Mosaic sets is (some) albums/sessions being spread across multiple discs -- but that thought did occur to me looking over the discography. I'm sure my wallet will hate the extra expense, but ultimtely I won't care about that aspect (after the bill's done been paid), and will probably be greatful for it ever thereafter. Quote
