king ubu Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 what's the negative of mono? Quote
Blue Train Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) I think the correct question is.....what is wrong with "pretend" mono of something some of you have bought just how many times now? It's like asking, "what's wrong with auto-tuning"? what's the negative of mono? Marketing, marketing, marketing.... What's it going to be in 2019....to make it possible to ring the bell and get them to buy it again? Edited October 1, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
jazzbo Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 Yes, KOB is a "made" mono recording in this set. That is not true of the other eight releases. Feel free to not buy it! I think I'm going to like this set; I've preordered it from Europe. Quote
JSngry Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 I actually have an old mono LP of Kind Of Blue. Pretty scratchy, but I have one. I like the cover better, to be honest. It's roomier. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 I don't seem to possess the two Monk tracks from Jazz Track! That's my excuse for buying it. Of course I could just listen to those two tracks on spotify, but it wouldn't be the same. Anyway I probably do own them I just have no idea where they are. Anyway... Sheesh I'd have hoped it was ok to buy a 'legit' Miles Davis box set at a moderate price without everybody getting as worked up as if it were Andorran. Familiar records, just sit and listen pleasantly for a while...who died? Quote
jazzbo Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) Two Monk tracks on Jazz Track? Hey, things get worked up in the Negative Zone! Just walk towards the light, works for me. Edited October 1, 2013 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 Those are great tracks. Other ways to get them, I have them on several Columbia releases. Quote

I think I'm going to like this set; I've preordered it from Europe. I'll just let my pre-order run, too ... and yeah, if anyone has any sources on the *entire* box being reprocessed to more roomy (hey, does a mono trumpet only need one valve? so KoB was in three-channel, right?), please enlighten us. If not, we've all got the point now, no need in beating a dead horse once it's dead. As for Monk at Newport, David, do look for this expanded 2CD Legacy reissue from 2002, it's OOP but can be found: Btw, why did he mis-spell his name? We all do know his birth certificate said "Thelonious Mono" Quote

jazzbo Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) ^Indeed, very good and also the inbedded link to Mr Marks piece has sold it all to me. Yes, I agree. Here's the link: http://www.stereophile.com/thefifthelement/206fifth/ From this link, this promising (at least to me) excerpt, a quote from Mike Fremmer: "The reissue's mix down from three tracks to one has been so skillfully and carefully done, even veteran mono KOB listeners might have difficulty guessing the source were that the only criterion. However, compared to my later "6-eye" 1AJ pressing, the reissue sounds far less "milky-cloudy" and far more transparent to the source, without veering off into the analytical. You can 'see' further into the mix and hear a clear delineation of direct and echo chamber sound as well as what sounds like 30th street studio room sound. Instrumental timbres are natural and textures rich." Edited October 2, 2013 by jazzbo Quote

jazzbo Posted October 3, 2013 Report Posted October 3, 2013 It's all the rage apparently in the Negative Zone. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 3, 2013 Report Posted October 3, 2013 It just seems silly to me, and I have done it back in the day. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 3, 2013 Report Posted October 3, 2013 I can see that, but it's the only one of the eight that they need to do that with it, and I trust Wilder to do a good job of it, and I'm looking forward to the set, I like these albums and can enjoy hearing those I've not heard before in mono. erwbol Posted October 3, 2013 Report Posted October 3, 2013 Yes, why is it so criminal to make the other original mono tapes available again? These albums were widely listened to that way for many years. Don't like it, don't buy it. This is something completely different from those decadent luxury Columbia Miles sets Sony keeps insisting on releasing: Mati & The Music: 52 record Covers 1955/2005 A limited edition book of 500 numbered copies.
