Rooster_Ties Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Nothing previously unreleased that I'm seeing - or what am I missing? Quote
erwbol Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Universal must have licensed the Ascenseur pour l'échafaud soundtrack to Sony for them to recreate the original Jazz Track album for this specific release. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 4, 2013 Author Report Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) Haven't read the linked page very carefully, so if there is not really unreleased stuff in this set maybe one of the moderators could move this thread to "Reissues". Edited September 4, 2013 by J.A.W. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Check out the amazon.co.uk price if interested in this set, much cheaper than amazon US. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 what's shipping like from Amazon UK to the US? worth it? I don't have some of this stuff and others I have in less-than-stellar CD issues. Might be worth it. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Right now the total including shipping to the US is about 55 dollars. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 Must be wonderful for folks with one ear. :-) Quote
charlesp Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Some of my favorite music appeals to my third ear - separates the wheat from the chaff. Quote

Clunky Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 This is a pointless reissue IMO. It's not as if you get dedicated mixes or alternate tracks only ever issued in mono. Quote
king ubu Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Pre-ordered (from amazon.de, cheaper for me than amazon.co.uk ... but I'll keep an eye open for it to turn up on amazon.it and amazon.fr, pre-order prices tend to vary a bit). Not sure it's pointless, after all I'm not sure why albums originally produced in mono (with a stereo-mix often created with far less caution, since it was for a smaller market and dubbed less important - at least that's my understanding, up to sometime in the sixties) are usually presented in stereo mixes when they're being reissued on CD. Anyway, since this is in a cheaper price league than the Dylan Mono box (which I got as well, but I had to pay the custom n***s and it sucked!), I'm in for this. Quote

mikeweil Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Must be wonderful for folks with one ear. :-) ... or those with one defective speaker ... But seriously, I think most mono recordings from the 1950's sound great, but those Columbia engineers made great stereo sound. They're trying to milk the collectors to the last drop. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Well I have a few beat up copies of a few of these in mono and in my opinion the mix and sound is overall great, I'm looking forward to this. Maybe they are milking the collectors but that's their job to sell records, and this is an interesting way to get more Miles (who sells) out there. And it's not exorbitantly priced especially from amazon europe. Quote
erwbol Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 It all depends on the quality of the remastering. I'd have to hear these first before I decide to spend money. Round About Midnight was a mono recording, right? So that will likely be the same sound as the Complete Columbia Album Collection. And Milestones has just been released as a mono Hybrid SACD by MoFi (together with Round About Midnight). Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 (edited) I wonder what source they'll use for Kind of Blue. According to Steve Hoffman the mono mastertape does no longer exist. Edited September 5, 2013 by J.A.W. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 I want the complete Blackhawk in mono. Oh wait, I'll just hit the MONO button on my amp! Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 Not the same thing. Lon is right, hitting the mono button is not the same thing. Quote

Too bad they aren't imaginative enough to record worthwhile new music and sell it. Edited September 5, 2013 by paul secor Quote
mikeweil Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 I wonder what source they'll use for Kind of Blue. According to Steve Hoffman the mono mastertape does no longer exist. In this case it wouldn't make much sense, mixing it down to a new mono version. Oh well ..... I have enough Miles in my collection for the rest of my life, anyway. Quote
king ubu Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Well, maybe there's some second generation or safety thing or whatever ... original tapes are lost all too often anyway, it seems. Quote
