king ubu Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 I see that Amazon UK has several Spotlite CD reissuing Dial sessions. I do own the Spotlite Complete Dial set by Bird, which is in very fine sound, and good documentation (I still had to get the Savoy 8CD set, as I only had the Savoy stuff on LP and never had the famous Gillespie sides etc). Then I also have a nice Dexter Gordon disc. Both of these are also still available from Amazon UK. Some questions regarding these: Red Norvo - On Dial What does this include? The Comet session with Bird also in the Savoy 8CD set? And what more? Dodo Marmarosa - Dial Masters Again, what does this include? I know some Marmarosa trio tracks (alternates, I guess) with Babasin, and they're fine. This is the one which interests me the most: Gillespie, Navarro, Berman - Complete Dial Sessions 1946-1948 What's the contents of this one? Erroll Garner - On Dial This has the Parker date with Garner, but I guess there must be some more on this CD? any help appreciated! ubu Quote
king ubu Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 No one has any of these? Or should I post this in the discography section? ubu Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I'll post some details here later. Quote
king ubu Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 I'll post some details here later. Thanks! No hurry! I was just wondering if my thread got lost. ubu Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Red Norvo - On Dial What does this include? The Comet session with Bird also in the Savoy 8CD set? And what more? I have almost all of the Dial LPs - the Norvo LP has Hallelujah 3 takes get happy 2 takes Slam Slam Blues 2 takes Congo Blues 5 takes No idea wether the CD has more. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Dodo Marmarosa - Dial Masters Again, what does this include? I know some Marmarosa trio tracks (alternates, I guess) with Babasin, and they're fine. The Marmarosa LP has the complete session with Babasin on cello (!) and Jackie Mills on drums of December 3, 1947, 11 takes in all, two test takes of "Tone Painting" and two AFRS Jubilee performances. brownie Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I have these on Spotlite LPs and can't help much. For CD details, you can have a look at this site: http://music.onino.co.uk/music-shrink/6749.html They seem to list all Spotlite CD releases including the Dial ones you're looking for! Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Erroll Garner - On Dial This has the Parker date with Garner, but I guess there must be some more on this CD? The Garner LP does NOT include the tracks with Parker but the trio tracks recorded at the same session (3 takes), and 10 piano solos recorded for Dial on June 10, 1947, all very nice. Quote

The Garner LP does NOT include the tracks with Parker but the trio tracks recorded at the same session (3 takes), and 10 piano solos recorded for Dial on June 10, 1947, all very nice. So the CD will include what you listed plus the Parker takes, most probably. Thanks! One to get! ubu Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 This is the one which interests me the most: Gillespie, Navarro, Berman - Complete Dial Sessions 1946-1948 What's the contents of this one? The Gillespie LP has the session of February 6, 1946 that Parker missed, with Lucky Thompson, Milt jackson, Ray Brown, Al Haig and Stan Levey (8 takes), and 8 takes from the Harmanites session of September 21, 1946 with Bill Harris, Serge Chaloff, Sonny Berman, and Ralph Burns. I have almost all of the Dial LPs - the Norvo LP has Hallelujah 3 takes get happy 2 takes Slam Slam Blues 2 takes Congo Blues 5 takes No idea wether the CD has more. So this is all the material with Diz & Bird! There has to be something else on the CD, no? Otherwise I (and my bank account) could gladly NOT get this as well... ubu Quote

That session with the cello is pretty interesting! (And it might be one of the earliest using cello in place of bass, I suppose). Will have to get it... ubu Quote
king ubu Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 And Edwards/McGhee always arouse my interest, so the additional material (not on your LP) might be worth getting it, too. Could this be the McGhee Dial date? I have that on one of those dreaded Definitive CDs I picked up for nothing some time ago, but don't have it at hand. I am not sure Marmarosa is on piano there, but could well be. ubu Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Just had a look at the site Brownie linked: if their listings are correct, the Gillespie/Berman/Navarro incudes only the master takes of the former two and adds the five master takes from the Don Lanphere session with Fats Navarro. Great music, but far from a complete issue! Quote

Thanks, brownie! Browsing around there now. They don't really list details ("soon", they say), and the prize comparison doesn't work either. But Amazon UK has them for 7 or 8 £ and that's alright anyway. This one looks rather interesting, too: Really interesting, I think! ubu Quote

mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 (edited) If J.A.W. has correct listings that site Brownie linked omitts the alternate takes in the listings. High wind in Hollywood The Gillespie includes a second take of 'Round Midnight not on the LP! Oh Geez - more for the ever growing want list Edited February 10, 2004 by mikeweil Quote

High wind in Hollywood Mike, these CDs in their oveview in the booklets only list each tune once, no matter if there are two, three or four tracks - it's rather an overview of compositions, than of contents of the disc. All information can be found in a small (smaller than CD-size) booklet included inside the (CD-sized) booklet. They're done quite lovingly, judging from the ones I saw or have. This all might be the reason for the incomplete listings on that site brownie linked. ubu Quote

mikeweil Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Now if there's one to get from that series, it is this: This is the ONLY recording of the Eckstine band giving an idea of the sound and the impact that band really had, believe me, indispensable stuff if you don't have it! Much better than the studio recordings! Quote
