catesta
You're right, but In this case, they didn't need an old Motown lawyer, Smokey said it outright. Only he knows whether or not he really believes the melody was lifted, but he fuckin' said it was and that shit should have been taken seriously. page
You're on Facebook, Jim? I was talking to someone about this subject tonight at a party. We both agreed this outcome will influence the future. He, just as a listener, thought this can't be since it isn't a real copy and I agree about that.. However as a songwriter I do see the other side and notice the ressemblance and that copyright needs to be protected. So I do understand what this family is trying to do. I do know though, we all are influenced by what we experience in life. I can't say when I compose a tune, that it wasn't influenced by anything I did ever listened to in my life before, of course it was. You look at the world through your own eyes with that what you have experienced so far. It is the way you develop your musicality by listening to (other) musicians and what they create. That enrichens (is that a word?) your ability to create. We probably need more socialism in the music industry, lol. Yeah, I was getting all emotionalpreachy, but bottom line, there was enough Gordy in the mix (inc. Smokey) that the young kids didn't stand a chance. Knowing some records is not the same as knowing the history, and this whole thing had an avenging empire/deposed kingdom undercurrent to it that was very unwisely either dismissed, discounted, or flat-out unrecognized. Do not for one second think that Janis Hunter does not have memories of what Anna Gordy did to Marvin. For starters. Or that Marvin III has forgotten how he was conceived. We're talking shit that these soap-opera movies and TV series are merely dramatic caricatures of. These are the real deal, real people, shit festering for decades. Beware of dismissing damaged goods who have good lawyers. Beware.
