Dan Gould Posted August 24, 2013 Report Posted August 24, 2013 My wife and I have really enjoyed this show since its inception, even though I suspect that 90% of what Michael Westen says about the spy game in his voice-overs is bullshit. Fun, escapist entertainment with a lead actor who is very talented and has great screen charisma. He showed what he can do on some episodes of Law & Order and has really excelled in this role. And my wife loves the guy who plays Sam, ever since The Evil Dead. Anyone else watching? Only two episodes left. Quote
Blue Train Posted August 24, 2013 Report Posted August 24, 2013 (edited) Burn Notice started out fine (I only started watching because of Bruce Campbell), but jumped the shark after the first few seasons....and (just like Breaking Bad) they always leave out just enough on the the details others might want to use....this last season has been terrible. Though nowhere as bad as last year with John C. McGinley & Sonja Sohn. Edited August 24, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
GA Russell Posted August 24, 2013 Report Posted August 24, 2013 Burn Notice: Season One - $9.99 http://www.amazon.com/Burn-Notice-Season-Jeffrey-Donovan/dp/B0015RRNMA/ref=sr_1_5?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1377369078&sr=1-5&keywords=Burn+Notice Thanks for the tip, Dan! Quote
Patrick Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 My wife and I watch it. A little darker/less fun much of this season, but serves as adequate escapist entertainment. I agree much of the Westen VoiceOver stuff likely is BS, but still entertaining. I think Mythbusters went after one or two of the spy craft "techniques" used. We put Covert Affairs in much the same category. Quote
JSngry Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 Never watched it, the show's name and that is was on USA made me think it was some bikini-babe-beach-bimbo thing, but it is spy stuff instead? Quote

For a few seasons the plot and Campbell/Donovan and Sharon Gless in short doses made up for it. They took out the whole point of Campbell, made the mother a main character (did I mention unbelievable?)...then there was Jesse Porter character. Didn't even start on the anorexic lead that started out with an Irish accent...that disappeared to everything about her character became even more of a joke than the Jesse Porter one. There was even a jumping on the Battlestar Galectica bandwagon by bringing in Tricia Helfer in the 2nd season. Did I mention T&A and tight outfits? The only reason they're killing the show is because they had to pay for the Convention center that was the studio to be blown-up just to get a 7th season shot in Miami. JohnS Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) I'm not sure it's reached the UK yet, at least not on a station I get. I've enjoyed the previous seasons but it isn't unmissable. Nice enough show but most of the plots follow the same routine. Never really thought of it as a t&a show but I'll admit to finding Gabrielle Anwar pretty tasty. Good to have Bruce Campbell in there too. Edited August 25, 2013 by JohnS Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 25, 2013 Author Report Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) Never watched it, the show's name and that is was on USA made me think it was some bikini-babe-beach-bimbo thing, but it is spy stuff instead? The basic concept: Spy gets a 'burn notice' AKA a termination notice. While taking up odd jobs uniquely suited to his spy skills, the burned spy has been trying to find out who burned him and why, and to get his old life back, ever since. Think the Mission Impossible TV series, or perhaps Wild, Wild West, again the series not the awful movie. You definitely have to check your brain at the door as the contrivances of Michael Westen getting into and out of danger can be fairly ridiculous. But there is plenty of action and a good dose of comedy too. A fun fact is that the original pitch had the same concept set in a city in New Jersey (not Atlantic City) and the network bought it only on condition that it be set in Miami and the creator agreed. Can't imagine the same show in some decrepit northeast city. The fact that there are extras dressed in bikinis hardly makes it a T&A show; they are used to set the scene but the camera never lingers on them, except on transitional/scene-setting pans. Jim, you should stream an episode or two or try to catch some earlier shows in syndication. Its a fun way to kill an hour. Edited August 25, 2013 by Dan Gould Quote
Tim McG Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 I used to watch it all the time, but after a couple seasons they ran out of creative stories and went for the manipulative emotion-driven stuff [kidnapped children, too much focus on the love story between the male and female leads, gratuitous violence which served no purpose for the plot, etc.] and I lost interest. The first two seasons were excellent. Quote
