Mark Stryker
I'm seeing reliable voices on Twitter indicating that Cedar Walton has died. I have not seen any news reports yet but the sources include his son, pianist Eric Reed and Josh Jackson's The Checkout, Edited August 19, 2013 by Mark Stryker

king ubu
Sad news. First heard him on Blakey's "Free for All", a record I still love very much, twenty years later on ...
Hardbopjazz
Holy Shit. What a loss. RIP Cedar. That you for all the music. The world is a better place because of your music. Last week there was a memorial celebration for Mulgrew Miller. Cedar was supposed to be a part of that. He was absent.

J.A.W.
Very sad news. I saw him several times in concert, with Clifford Jordan, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins. They're all gone now.

king ubu
Yeah, Eastern Rebellion! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvDsDF_Zid4 Would love to have such memories, Hans! Never caught any of them in time ... but that was a mighty fine band Jordan/Walton had!
Clunky
Very sad . Great pianist and composer .
Dan Gould
Oh fuck. Saw him twice with the Ralph Moore edition of Eastern Rebellion, including my only trip to the Vanguard. Great player and I don't know if he truly got all the acclaim his composing deserved. I'll be spinning a lot of music in his memory.
Kevin Bresnahan
I am lucky to have seen Cedar quite a few times over the years. If I saw his name on the bill, I made sure to go. He never disappointed. RIP to a great pianist.

Mark Stryker
You know, all three members of the "The Magic Triangle" are now gone -- Cedar, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins. Very special rhythm section. Incomparable feel in the idiom.
Steve Reynolds
and he just played July @ The Vanguard I recently read the fine interview with Ethan Iverson he did a couple of year's back, He came across as fine human being. I will dig up Mosaic later today for tomorrow's drive to work RIP, sir

mjzee
I saw Jackie McLean backed by Cedar's trio at the Vanguard about a year before Jackie passed. It was around Christmas time. Cedar opened with his own set. A very magical evening. RIP, and thanks for all you've given.
jmjk
RIP, Cedar. I originally bought his lp called Cedar! because KD was on it, but obviously learned a larger appreciation for Cedar himself. I enjoy his work with Blue Mitchell and "Mode For Joe" is one of my favorite of his compositions.
