I'm seeing reliable voices on Twitter indicating that Cedar Walton has died. I have not seen any news reports yet but the sources include his son, pianist Eric Reed and Josh Jackson's The Checkout,

Holy Shit. What a loss. RIP Cedar. That you for all the music. The world is a better place because of your music.

Last week there was a memorial celebration for Mulgrew Miller. Cedar was supposed to be a part of that. He was absent.

Oh fuck. Saw him twice with the Ralph Moore edition of Eastern Rebellion, including my only trip to the Vanguard. Great player and I don't know if he truly got all the acclaim his composing deserved. I'll be spinning a lot of music in his memory.

I recently read the fine interview with Ethan Iverson he did a couple of year's back, He came across as fine human being.

I saw Jackie McLean backed by Cedar's trio at the Vanguard about a year before Jackie passed. It was around Christmas time. Cedar opened with his own set. A very magical evening. RIP, and thanks for all you've given.

I originally bought his lp called Cedar! because KD was on it, but obviously learned a larger appreciation for Cedar himself. I enjoy his work with Blue Mitchell and "Mode For Joe" is one of my favorite of his compositions.
