Probably a decade ago and maybe even 5 years ago, I would have gone for this. Now I realize it just one more thing that will sit on my shelves unheard. Somewhere along the line I picked up Flood and that's really the only newish thing of interest (to me), so basically I'm out.

I have all the Columbia Herbie I need to including "Flood",. the VSOP and trio discs, but it might be worth it for a few of the acoustic/electric projects that were still great, that I don't have.

I'll get it if/when the price gets really low, as is happening on a lot of their other similar jazz boxes. At $10 a disc, I'm not interested. At $3 a disc, I certainly am, regardless of how many of them I already own.

Has a price point been determined? Sorry if I missed it. That will be the determining factor for me.

At the right price, I'd love to have this stuff.

Will a remastered "The Quintet" VSOP disc sound better over the old CD? the recording quality for that one isn't that good.

That depends on the mastering and the quality of the source used for the mastering. Contrary to what some people seem to think, a remaster isn't per definition better.

That's true Hans, but you cpmpare "VSOP The Quintet" to "Tempest in the Colosseum" the quality is night and day. Maybe the source for the original "The Quintet" CD mastering wasn't that good.

I thought this thread referred to a BBC box set of Hancock's Half Hour radio programmes.

Perhaps Mosaic could do one, after their Redd Foxx set :g

It's been done!

Regarding the Herbie box, I too will get this if the price drops, as I expect it will. I have hardly anything from this period of his career. It will be fun to explore it for the first time.

This is exactly the kind of box set I'd love to borrow from someone for about a year -- spin everything two of three times -- and then figure out which 15 (of the 35 dates) I really need.

So If money were no object (and shelf-space no concern) -- I'd love to have this -- but realisticaly, I'm sure most of it would sit on the shelf, unlistened to for years on end.

In fact, the 15 dates I really NEED from this set might even get listened to a little LESS for being 'lost' in amongst the total of 35 -- especially if the packaging makes it even the slightest bit of a pain to find particular albums on a whim. I'm really better off only owning the 15 dates I really need.

That said, I can vouch for the two Japanese only trio dates with Ron and Tony -- both of which are wonderful (and I'm happy I sprung for the import versions of on CD).

Yes, they are wonderful, though I give the slight edge to the second one, "Trio '81". I got the last copy of that from Dusty Groove, years ago.

I'm betting that at some point the box will be available at a price that would amount to the cost of 15 discs, or less, so you could consider the other 20 a bonus. Then pack away (or give away) the 20 you don't need along with the box and keep handy the 15 good'uns.

i'm squarely on the fence.

i own about 65% of it (including all of the sony japan titles) but to have it all in once place in one poorly designed package would be nice. however, there's a lot of 80's dross in there that i could do without. then again, at $7.- a title delivered...

in a way, i feel like rooster; i'd love to borrow this from someone and live with it for a bit. it's a serious reference oblisk, isn't it?

standby - i have have copies of 'flood', 'dedication', et al available soon.

but that packaging.... oye.

i'm taking crips's tack.

The two of them, plus Ron Carter's "Third Plane" is the complete output of that group as a trio, correct?

Not aware of any others (trio-dates only) under Herbie's or Ron's name, nor any under Tony's (correct?)
