The exellent and underrated pianist Paul Smith died Saturday in Los Angeles.

I was just thinking about Paul Smith last night while listening to Stuff Smith's Cat on a Hot Fiddle. I'm glad to read that he remained active as a performer. RIP.

His father gave him some very good advice:

"My father told me when I was young," he told The Times in 1994, "that since I was going to have to work a very long time, choose something I enjoyed and I'd never have to work a day in my life. I'm 72 and I still enjoy playing."

I was not really moved by the albums Paul Smith recorded under his nameI have heard but he was in fine form in the 'Piano Playhouse' session released by VSOP.

His playing with Ella in the 'Twelve Nights in Hollywood' set contributed much to the excellence of the music!
