Mark Stryker Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 (edited) Interesting class announced today: Anthony Braxton, Richard Davis, Keith Jarrett, Jamey Aebersold (advocacy) Edited June 27, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote
colinmce Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 Good for Keith & Abersold. Hurray, hurray for Anthony & Mr. Davis! Quote
mjzee Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 Braxton, really? C'mon. That's just a triumph for the university system. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 I am really glad that Richard Davis was honored and not overlooked. He richly deserves the honor but has been in Wisconsin teaching for 35 years, away from media centers, and I wondered if he would ever be recognized. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 Very interesting class indeed! I did a long interview with Jamey for the fourth part of the Indiana jazz series... he's a very sharp, funny storyteller. Glad as well to see Davis get this recognition. Quote
Justin V Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 (edited) Coincidentally, I was just talking with Harold Mabern (speaking of master musicians deserving of wider recognition...) about Richard Davis some last night. Although musicians and aficionados seem to appreciate Davis, it's fantastic that he's being acknowledged for his contributions to the music in such a public way. Congratulations to Richard Davis and the rest of the 2014 NEA Jazz Masters! EDIT: I started about musicians who deserve to be recognized as NEA Jazz Masters. Although I can't argue with Jarrett being recognized as an NEA Jazz Master, it's baffling that Paul Bley isn't yet one... Edited June 27, 2013 by Justin V Quote
Mike Schwartz Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 Very interesting class indeed! I did a long interview with Jamey for the fourth part of the Indiana jazz series... he's a very sharp, funny storyteller. Glad as well to see Davis get this recognition. As learned in recent years, it's really the campaign put forth by the supporters of the eventual recipients that get's them in; in Mr. Davis' case apparently someone has been in his corner! Quote
LWayne Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 (edited) Although I can't argue with Jarrett being recognized as an NEA Jazz Master, it's baffling that Paul Bley isn't yet one... Couldn't agree more with Justin about Paul Bley. One of the most diverse, original, voices still performing and very deserving of the honor. Absolutely one of my favorites for a long-time now. Would his being a Canadian citizen impact his candidacy? LWayne Edited June 27, 2013 by LWayne Quote
B. Clugston Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Here's a link to the 2014 concert and ceremony. Beautiful speeches by Richard Davis and Anthony Braxton. I wonder if Wynton enjoyed Trillium J? http://new.livestream.com/jazz/neajazzmasters14 Quote
colinmce Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Ha! He stode out past that group with a coldness! Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 "I always needed a sonic surprise that could help me continue to want to live. Not just to be alive, but to be aware of how miraculous it is, this thing we call being alive....I believe in the power of creativity and the power of creativity to effect motivation; creativity to effect alignment; creativity as part of a holistic sealing pattern that helps us to understand one another and community." martini Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 Thanks for sharing the link to the show. I really enjoyed Braxton's speech. It was also a trip to see the opera performance. I have his operas on CD, but it would be great to have a DVD of one of them. The visual element of the performance is great. Quote

Justin V Posted January 26, 2014 Report Posted January 26, 2014 EDIT: I started about musicians who deserve to be recognized as NEA Jazz Masters. Although I can't argue with Jarrett being recognized as an NEA Jazz Master, it's baffling that Paul Bley isn't yet one... Bley's Canadian citizenship might be a factor there. I forgot that I started about who deserves to be named an NEA Jazz Master 7 months ago. I addressed that issue there: "How long has Bley lived in the US? Since the '50s or '60s, I presume. According to NEA's page, "the recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States," which I'm assuming Bley is. It's worth noting that Toots Thielemans, who is deservedly an NEA Jazz Master, became a US citizen in 1957. It seems that anyone can nominate one person a year, and nominations remain active for 5 years. Perhaps one of our in-house journalists, or anyone else for that matter, could further the cause of a deserving musician." Quote
Michael Weiss Posted January 26, 2014 Report Posted January 26, 2014 They never gave Johnny Griffin one. He was a US citizen but he lived in Europe since 1963 - maybe that was the factor. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 Ah, didn't realize "permanent residency" was a possibility. I believe Bley has had such status since the '70s (my copy of Stopping Time is buried somewhere). Quote
B. Clugston Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 Paul Bley's country of birth hasn't forgotten him. He was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2008. Quote
