jazzbo Posted June 14, 2013 Report Posted June 14, 2013 Yes, I've mentioned in post #10 that I could use more discs like "Changeless." Quote
etherbored Posted June 14, 2013 Report Posted June 14, 2013 this thread has become insanely long and encompassing of everything but 'somewhere'. well, i, for one, second your motion. keith? get on that for us... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 14, 2013 Author Report Posted June 14, 2013 Well, I wonder if there will be more trio albums with free playing. Keith seems interested (with the exception of the most recent solo discs and "Sleeper") to bring trio shows out from a decade ago or more. From Jack DeJohnette's Facebook (which he really does maintain, we were talking about boxing this morning) it seems they've been doing more of the vamp based playing, and from what I understand "Deep Space" on "Somewhere" is a free improvisation? GregK Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 I return to Out Of Towners frequently, but I like them all. However I probably have listened to Always Let Me Go the most, followed by Inside Out. Just fantastic improvisations. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 Ah, Always Let Me Go. I had meant to pick that one up for years and years, but never did. Then I finally picked it up late last year. It did not disappoint. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 This thread made me dig out my Standards I and watch it. That was nice. Now I'm waiting for the Keith Jarrett Story film, starring Bryan Cranston. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 15, 2013 Author Report Posted June 15, 2013 Ah, Always Let Me Go. I had meant to pick that one up for years and years, but never did. Then I finally picked it up late last year. It did not disappoint. I like "Tributaries" on that and the improvisation "Hearts in Space"? when they start hitting a real hard swing halfway through. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 15, 2013 Author Report Posted June 15, 2013 Listening to "At the Deer Head Inn" right now, I'm surprised at how explicity Motian is swinging, rather than the oblique way he usually did. It's the most raw Jarrett I've heard in the trio definitely. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 You Don't Know What Love Is, baby!!!Sounds like you're digging it, though. Welcome to the Dark Side. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 15, 2013 Author Report Posted June 15, 2013 Yeah, that's incredible. When they go into that vamp zone it's unbeatable. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 Exactly. It's like they suck you into their own collective trance. Transcendent. Outside of the opening number from Koln, it's my favorite Jarrett tune. Hmmmm...and perhaps the opening number from Vienna.... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 15, 2013 Author Report Posted June 15, 2013 Motian provides a different color with the straight eights which is nice on that vamp, but then because Motian and DeJohnette were house drummers for ECM, I can hear the overlap, too. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 15, 2013 Report Posted June 15, 2013 Yeah, I guess that might be why I never heard a huge difference there. At least playing with Keith, anyway. BTW, nice trivia aside: I'm not sure if Cookie Coogan is a member here, she was on JC, but she was actaully at the Deerhead date. Kinda cool having "one of our own" being there. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 16, 2013 Author Report Posted June 16, 2013 There has to be way more from that Deerhead date. Knowing ECM it's doubtful we'll get that Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 Will you be disappointed if there isn't? Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 16, 2013 Author Report Posted June 16, 2013 Well, it's not entirely surprising because most Jarrett releases are of complete concerts. I wonder if that was a complete set, sounds like it. Quote
etherbored Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 i *knew* you'd like that date. 'always let me go' is the sole keith jarrett record i don't own... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 16, 2013 Author Report Posted June 16, 2013 "Always Let Me Go" is a more fully fleshed out improv date than "Inside Out", there are sections that take a while to get going but you will enjoy it Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 I completely agree with CJ, etherbored. It's a must own, IMO. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 16, 2013 Author Report Posted June 16, 2013 That's one of the discs I gave to the student who was a big Jarrett fan when I was a TA. I see I can get it for a decent second hand price though. Quote
etherbored Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 i've heard it several times - i'm just not impressed. the free playing did zero point zero for me. however, i'll give it another listen... Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 The Standards Trio material is better, IMO, but the free albums are very enjoyable. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 16, 2013 Author Report Posted June 16, 2013 I find it interesting that some people were dissapointed there was no free playing on "My Foolish Heart", but "Straight no Chaser" on there gets pretty free! Quote
Guy Berger Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 "Always Let Me Go" is a more fully fleshed out improv date than "Inside Out", there are sections that take a while to get going but you will enjoy it I think this one is pretty boring though it has its moments. I say this as someone who likes much of KJ's music and also a lot of freely improved music. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 17, 2013 Author Report Posted June 17, 2013 The vamp of "Tributaries" IIRC gets pretty intense, but yes there are sections of that album that are very slow Quote
