I did a search so hope this is not a duplication ...

Guitarist John Klopotowski's "A Jazz Life" is available (has been for a while) for free reading on line through Scribd at:

A Jazz Life: Memoirs and studies drawn from experiences as a student of Warne Marsh, 1982 - 1987

This is a fascinating read (230 + pages) on the music, teachings and life of Warne Marsh written from the perspective of one of his students. It also includes video and audio examples of interviews and Warne's playing from live performances, most of which have never previously seen the light of day (there's some superb Warne, and an amazing thing of Lennie Tristano and Sonny Dallas, among other things) ...

Big thanks to John for the writing and playing - from the heart.

p.s. I read it on line - I was going to download it but my security wouldn't let me for some reason ...

Is there a download icon or link n that page? Looked to no avail.

Right. Here (Japan) there is a large download icon on the opening page, but on closer inspection I see it is unrelated. Thank you McAfee.

I sat down earlier and read this. I really recommend it. It reconnected me with those magical feelings one feels when finding a great teacher, especially one-on-one. It's like your excitement over entry into fresh territory is bouyed and calmed by the wisdom of a supportive guide. Often this is a personal hero. That doesn't mean there are no rocky sessions, egos, etc. But as a former student of many jazz luminaries I can tell you what that feeling was like sitting down with someone like Warne, especially that first time. Tingles. Good work.

I emailed JK when he posted that on another board a few years ago. He went to the same college I went to, and studied with the same composition teacher, John Lessard. He wound up studying privately with JL (one of Nadia Boulanger's favorite students) for seven years. He sent me some clips of him playing guitar in an organ trio. Sounded good, nice guy.
