Hardbopjazz Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) For a final project, my daughter who is in the 8th grade needs to do a poll on smoking. She needs to have 50 plus answers to the poll. She did manage to get 42 so far. I figure I could ask here. Edited June 1, 2013 by Hardbopjazz Quote
JSngry Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Did, but stopped. Three times, the last being 5-6 years ago. Hopefully that distance keeps growing. Quote
jeffcrom Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) My mom, who died of lung cancer in 2005, smoked pretty much her whole life, and I got turned off by the whole idea at a very young age. I remember being in the car with her in the wintertime while she smoked with all the windows rolled up. In those days when cars were not as tightly constructed as today, I would stick my nose in the crack where the window met the door, desperate for clean air. Edited June 2, 2013 by jeffcrom Quote

My dad smoked from 1945 to 1981. When we would be in the car I would stick my head out the window for fresh air. I guess we were 2nd hand smokers. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 I smoked for 12 years and quit 15 years ago. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Smoked from 18 to 35. Stopped 22 years ago. Nearly 23. Halleluia. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 I smoked for 48 years and stopped 3 years ago. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 First tried in high school, only an occasional puff as I was heavily into athletics until my mid-twenties. In graduate school I smoked about a pack a day for some crazy reason and quit immediately upon finishing grad school in 2007. Quote
king ubu Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 never - not sure if I'm missing something, but I can't be bothered to find out Quote
kinuta Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 I stopped about 24 years ago. My dad was a very heavy unfiltered smoker. He died at 49. Quote
mjb Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 I smoked from time to time until 1992. Not a puff since. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Not sure. According to my doctor, no, but it's more complicated than that. Hopefully you can get to fifty without me... Quote
J.A.W. Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Stopped twice, last time cold turkey in 1987. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 I've never smoked cigarettes. I smoke a pipe. I used to smoke cigars, and was in the business for a while ten years ago. Quote
Aggie87 Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 My dad was a very heavy unfiltered smoker. He died at 49. Mine was too. He died from it at 56. Never got to meet any of his grandchildren. The thought of that happening to me is enough to make me never want to even try a cigarette. Quote
brownie Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 My mother was a heavy smoker (more than 2 packs a day). She died of lung cancer... Never smoked much myself. Gave up smoking cigarettes three decades ago. Putting an end to it was no problem at all. Still love cigar smoking but have curtailed this lately. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 (edited) No. Grew up in an a home where smoking was not tolerated. At school smoking always seemed too desperate a ploy to be included with the cool kids. I'm always saddened by how, despite all the evidence, its pull on the young remains so strong. All the education in the world cannot counteract the cultural cache it still commands amongst many kids. I understand the appeal of doing what is forbidden, but.... The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 I've been smoking since I left school at 16. Rolled my own since '69 or '70. Don't smoke much - it takes me 15-16 days to get through 50g of tobacco. That's VERY THIN rolling, as I have 10-11 a day. Dunno when my Mum started. She used to smoke very expensive fags like Abdullah 37 and Passing Clouds, until I turned her on to roll-ups. She was 97 when she died. My Dad was 71 when he died; used to smoke little cigars - cheroots? MG Quote
Larry Kart Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Quit in about 1980, smoke a pipe about five or ten times a year, mostly because I still have some nice pipes from 40 or so years ago. Quote
