Scott Dolan Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Boy, I'd love to see that Drake Quartet on Saturday. Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Wow! Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park: Jack DeJohnette: Special Legends Edition with Muhal Richard Abrams, Larry Gray, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill; 6:30 p.m. Do what??? Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Yep, that's a good one too! Think I'll have to make the trip up this year. Last time we were there the Gerald Wilson Orchestra capped off Saturday night, then Ornette closed out the festival. This year's line up isn't quite on that level, but pretty darn solid. Quote
Blue Train Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Leaving out the "Christopher McBride" thing, that might actually be the best lineup in my lifetime @ that festival. Quote
sonnymax Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 who is Christopher McBride?!? LOL! Don't laugh too hard, he's an alto saxophonist from Chicago. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Leaving out the "Christopher McBride" thing, that might actually be the best lineup in my lifetime @ that festival. 2008 was better, IMO. Quote
ejp626 Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Very solid -- quite a few ensembles I would turn out for, but I just can't make it this year. Tatsu Aoki and Eigen drumming is pretty good -- saw them years ago. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Boy, I'd love to see that Drake Quartet on Saturday. Got my fill with Drake on the 14th @ Vision Fest and then a few nights during the week at The Stone in October which will feature the GREAT Cooper-Moore Quote
blake Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 It's been a few years since I've been in town during Jazz Fest, but I will likely be there this year. Now that the Velvet is gone, where are those after-fest jam sessions taking place? Are they still taking place? Quote
ejp626 Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 It's been a few years since I've been in town during Jazz Fest, but I will likely be there this year. Now that the Velvet is gone, where are those after-fest jam sessions taking place? Are they still taking place?Definitely will be something at Jazz Showcase in the South Loop. Probably some other events elsewhere -- Green Mill perhaps? Quote
John Litweiler Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Yes, the Showcase, Green Mill, and other clubs will be open. Umbrella and AACM musicians will surely be offering late sets, too. After the Velvet closed musicians were playing in a big space at Milwakee Ave. and Diversey, a few doors south of Elastic. Quote
blake Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 Thanks for the replies. The Umbrella musicians are pretty easy to keep track of via websites and social media. The AACM musicians and others who were Velvet regulars (I'm not sure if, for one example, Isaiah Spencer is AACM) seem to be much more difficult for an out-of-towner to keep track of...the AACM site is never current and related musician sites either don't exist or also are not current. Any direction as to where to keep an eye out would be appreciated. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 I would check out Mike Reed's new place http://www.constellation-chicago.com/ Quote
blake Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 Thanks, Chuck. I just remembered the http://now-is.org/ site too. That one has proven very useful in the years since Malachi kept an events calendar on his site. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Had a wonderful time. Details later. I think the Wadada set was the best thing by far but the locals seemed to disagree. Not many places you can hear something like Jack's set with Mitchell, Threadgill and Abrams. Atomic was nice but........... Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Loved this version of Ten Freedom Summers, too. The blend of strings with the quartet worked beautifully, and the visual art element was arresting. The Ann Arbor concert was able to include a finale blow out for Smith that he seemed building towards in Chicago, but the time got away from him. So he played more trumpet at the Edge Fest, though the trade out of hearing the more complete work was worth it in Chi. What a great way to memorialize the anniversary of King's "Dream" speech. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Wish I'd been there. Someday. Quote
Rob C Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Hey, y'all. Long time, no post. I think this year's Fest was pretty much the best one I've ever been to. Moving from Grant Park to Millennium Park improved the experience in every possible way (better sound, better seats, better food, better bathrooms). The highlights for me were, roughly in order of enjoyment: Rudresh Mahanthappa Atomic Hamid Drake/Harrison Bankhead/Ernest Dawkins Chicago Trio Jack DeJohnette and all those great AACM guys Hamid Drake's Bindu Reggaeology The taiko drumming set with Hamid and Michael Zerang Ernie Krivda I was a little disappointed in the Hamid/Kidd Jordan/William Parker/Cooper-Moore set, though it had its moments (I may have been defeated by having high expectations for this one). I also wasn't really feeling the Wadada Leo Smith set. Most of the rest that I saw was enjoyable, but probably not all that memorable. Still, I had a great four days at the festival. I hadn't been listening to much jazz lately. I've spent a lot more time with rock music in the past couple of years than with jazz. But this weekend really re-energized me about jazz. I've been listening to it non-stop for the past few days. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Well I have posted some shots on facebook and will share them here. Talking to Henry. Talking with Randy Weston after an amazing solo recital. My old friend Alvin Fielder with his old friend London Branch. Wadada had a video artist working the jumbo tron during his performance and this is a "capture". Wadada Leo Smith's crew taking a curtain call after performing some sections of his Ten Freedom Summers. Maybe more later. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 After seeing Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, Hamid Drake, Mars Williams, Ira Sullivan, Pheeroan akLaff, Brian Sandstrom, Alvin Fielder and Randy Weston this week in Chicago, all I can do is echo what my old friend Lloyd Sachs said on Thursday night - "you were really lucky". Lucky indeed. Quote
