Last time we were there the Gerald Wilson Orchestra capped off Saturday night, then Ornette closed out the festival. This year's line up isn't quite on that level, but pretty darn solid. Quote

After the Velvet closed musicians were playing in a big space at Milwakee Ave. and Diversey, a few doors south of Elastic. Quote
blake Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 Thanks for the replies. The Umbrella musicians are pretty easy to keep track of via websites and social media. The AACM musicians and others who were Velvet regulars (I'm not sure if, for one example, Isaiah Spencer is AACM) seem to be much more difficult for an out-of-towner to keep track of...the AACM site is never current and related musician sites either don't exist or also are not current. Any direction as to where to keep an eye out would be appreciated. Quote

Not many places you can hear something like Jack's set with Mitchell, Threadgill and Abrams. Atomic was nice but........... Quote

The blend of strings with the quartet worked beautifully, and the visual art element was arresting. The Ann Arbor concert was able to include a finale blow out for Smith that he seemed building towards in Chicago, but the time got away from him. So he played more trumpet at the Edge Fest, though the trade out of hearing the more complete work was worth it in Chi. What a great way to memorialize the anniversary of King's "Dream" speech. Quote

Moving from Grant Park to Millennium Park improved the experience in every possible way (better sound, better seats, better food, better bathrooms). The highlights for me were, roughly in order of enjoyment: Rudresh Mahanthappa Atomic Hamid Drake/Harrison Bankhead/Ernest Dawkins Chicago Trio Jack DeJohnette and all those great AACM guys Hamid Drake's Bindu Reggaeology The taiko drumming set with Hamid and Michael Zerang Ernie Krivda I was a little disappointed in the Hamid/Kidd Jordan/William Parker/Cooper-Moore set, though it had its moments (I may have been defeated by having high expectations for this one). I also wasn't really feeling the Wadada Leo Smith set. Most of the rest that I saw was enjoyable, but probably not all that memorable. Still, I had a great four days at the festival. I hadn't been listening to much jazz lately. I've spent a lot more time with rock music in the past couple of years than with jazz. But this weekend really re-energized me about jazz. I've been listening to it non-stop for the past few days. Quote
