fasstrack Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 He's suffered a massive stroke-2nd stroke in 2 years. Keep a good thought. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 Damn. Great pianist. His work with Tony Williams I dig tremendously, as well as his MaxJazz releases. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Sorry to hear - indeed, hope he recovers. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Might need to spin Kenny Garrett's "Beyond the Wall". Despite the sound sucking, it's great music. Quote
Justin V Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 That's horrible news. I hope Mr. Miller makes a full and speedy recovery. Quote
ValerieB Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Amen to all said above. i'm sending very strong prayers out to Mulgrew and his family, as I know tons of other folks are. he's the most special man, aside from his enormous talent. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Damn, this is very sad news. Our thoughts are with him for a full recovery. Quote
Gheorghe Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Sorry to hear. Really a great pianist, saw him an several occasions.... Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 I had no idea he had suffered a stroke previously. I really hope he pulls through with no lasting effects. There were seemingly countless neo-bopper recordings I've purchased with 'Grew in the rhythm section. He was like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) Really a great pianist, saw him an several occasions.... Mulgrew is a really excellent musician. The first time I got to see him was with Woody Shaw. Then with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers I think. On the third occasion that I can recall, he had his own lineup - touring his 'Hand In Hand' CD. Hardbopjazz Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 I wish him a complete recovery. He is a real nice person besides being a great pianist. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Geez, he's only 58 .... my thoughts are with him, I have followed his career all over the years ans like his development - he is supposed to follow Kenny Barron on the throne of the best all-round pianist one day. Get well soon! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 I don't think anyone has anything bad to say about Mulgrew. I think he's so consistent it's so hard to realize sometimes how good he is. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) I saw Mulgrew perform a few months ago and he sounded great. I didn't know he had a prior stroke. Dick Conte on KCSM just mentioned Mulgrew's stroke, which brought me here. This makes me very sad. Here's hoping he bounces back. We're all rooting for you, Mulgrew! king ubu Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Very fine pianist indeed. Only caught him live once, in a four piano affair, first him and Kenny Barron, then Benny Green and (I think) Eric Reid - and finally an encore with all four of them. The older guys taught the younger ones plenty of lessons that night! All the best to Mulgrew Miller, hope he'll recover and lighten up our days many more years! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 One of my favorite living jazz pianists. Hope he recovers and is able to return to the keyboard. Quote
JSngry Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 Sorry to hear about this. Hoping for the best possible outcome! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) One of my favorite living jazz pianists. Hope he recovers and is able to return to the keyboard. Agreed. Again, his chops are so great that the fact he's so good is subtle. One of my fav. solos by him is on Tony's "Angel Street", the studio version. Also "Third Quadrant" on Kenny Garrett's maligned "Simply Said". Think I'll pull out "Live at the Kennedy Center, Vol. 2" Edited May 28, 2013 by CJ Shearn Quote
ValerieB Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 I am praying daily for this incredibly special man: Mulgrew Miller!! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 Valerie, do you know if he received care within 3 hours of his stroke? I've heard thats generally when the effects of strokes can be lessened. Quote
