Well then they're just being stubborn and silly.

And that's exactly what bugs me: people whining about "modern times" making their lives harder, but refusing to do something about it.

It used to bug me, but I've become a much more patient person over the years. I still have my limits just like everyone else, but waiting a little longer in line because somebody is writing a check isn't one of them.

I note that 95% of the time it is an older person. They're simply going about their everyday life as they have been for longer than I've been alive. They also tend to be the type of people that have chosen to slow down and enjoy life instead of rushing from point A to point B every step of the way.

With that said, driving 5mph under the speed limit in front of me still isn't met with that same level of patience. I'm working on it...

Everyone (myself included) is in too much of a hurry. We should all slow down.

Oops, you posted this while I was typing.

But yes, I agree 100%.

What bugs me is that many older persons (I'm 66 by the way) don't - or don't want to - see the convenience of a more modern way of living than they were used to. Just an example - I live in an apartment building with quite a few people who are older than I am and they refuse to use a computer for even the simplest things, making life harder for themselves. Their excuse: I'm too old for that kind of thing; they don't even try...

In the entire history of mankind....there are always people like that. Why at this point does it bother anyone?

I'm not bothered to the point that I'd like to see them tried for crimes against humanity or anything. Well, in my Fantasy Revenge World, maybe. But in real time It's more like "wow, shouldn't have picked this line".

But every now and then you get the person who makes a show out of their deliberateness, like I will NOT be rushed, and I will NOT take anybody else into consideration, this is ALL about me, and if YOU don't like it, you can just sit there and WATCH.

Well, then, time for your close up Miss Desmond!

One time, a store manager our Kroger came by and put the register on hold (or whatever it is they do that locks an in-progress transaction) during one such incident. It was @ 5:30 PM on a Friday afternoon, line backed up out the ass. He moved the line - and the cashier - to another register and said "ma'am, we'll get back to you when you're ready".

There was laughter almost all around. But three people got through the new line before the lady said," I'm ready now" in a tone of unmistakeable Why Am I Having To Wait For You To Be Here?

I love that Kroger!

Oh, OK. I wasn't getting that from what you were saying before.

I've never really met anybody with that mindset, which may have informed my confused conclusion.

The folks I know just don't have any use for computers. And they're perfectly content not to.

To be fair, though, there are folks who just choose not to use the technology. My sister-in-law, a middle-aged Boomer, is one of them.

On the flip side, if that is the case, having the check written out ahead of time isn't an unreasonable thing to ask, IMHO.

Can't remember the last time I saw someone writing a cheque in a shop. Cash or chip'n pin in Ye Olde Englande these days.

I don't think we have the chip n pin thing here - at least not widespread. It's Debit or Credit card (or cash) for most, that I'm aware of.

Until recently, I had been debit for everything for at least ten years. For the past year, I pay cash for everything except to fill up my car. It all comes from the same place, but I appreciate it more when I see it disappearing.

It's true I was impaired by lack of cash when I had to write a check in a supermarket line. Still, the vehemence I read here is startling.

I agree with Mr. Litweiler.
