Sonny has gone back to a quartet format. The only holdover is Bob Cranshaw on bass.

the pianst and dummer have not been named yet on his website. Anyone comes to mind that you think might be on piano and drums?

Website of Umbria Jazz Festival says Mark Soskin, Bob Cranshaw and Herlin Riley. http://www.umbriajazz.com/artisti/sonny-rollins-000 Never a big Soskin fan, but Riley in that context could be quite interesting -- I've heard him sound very creative with Ahmad Jamal. Regardess of who's in the band, a quartet means Sonny will necessarily have to take more of the spotlight for longer periods, a challenge since as he's aged he's relied on others to spell him much more than in the past. Glad to see no percussion. Less clutter is good. Piano more likely to lay out more than guitar, leaving more trio playing.

So the group would not really be that "new" since Soskin and Cranshaw both have history with Rollins.

I have seen him 8 times. As a result of the last three times I either saw, or bought tickets....I am not sure about seeing him with whomever at this point.

Having said that.

I really have never understood why he had a group of people that he seemed to play to down to at times. Like he didn't want to embarrass them.

P.S. Sonnymmon for Two with Ornette Coleman. EN FUEGO!

Not saying it was the best perofmance I have seen involving either of them....but come on. My age and Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman together. If they were just warming up....

I think that Rollins playing on that track with Ornette is tremendous while I think Ornette is not quite with it.

So at 80 he could have hung with Hamid do maybe he still can.

I have always wanted to hear him with a great NOW drummer

Why not Al Foster? I have several recordings with Al Foster and one where Al never made it to the gig. He ended up getting arrested for marijuana possession while in Japan. Sonny went on that night without drums or precessions.
