Hardbopjazz Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) Sonny has gone back to a quartet format. The only holdover is Bob Cranshaw on bass.the pianst and dummer have not been named yet on his website. Anyone comes to mind that you think might be on piano and drums? clifford_thornton Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Keith Tippett and Louis Moholo-Moholo? Quote

bertrand Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Tony Falanga and Denardo Coleman (it's going to be a 2-bass, no piano quartet). Bertrand. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Keith Tippett and Louis Moholo-Moholo? Yeah!!!...Sonny and Louis would be no joke...phew....... Quote
Mark Stryker Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Website of Umbria Jazz Festival says Mark Soskin, Bob Cranshaw and Herlin Riley. http://www.umbriajazz.com/artisti/sonny-rollins-000 Never a big Soskin fan, but Riley in that context could be quite interesting -- I've heard him sound very creative with Ahmad Jamal. Regardess of who's in the band, a quartet means Sonny will necessarily have to take more of the spotlight for longer periods, a challenge since as he's aged he's relied on others to spell him much more than in the past. Glad to see no percussion. Less clutter is good. Piano more likely to lay out more than guitar, leaving more trio playing. Edited May 16, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote
John Litweiler Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Moholo is a good suggestion. But how about Stan Tracey and Clark Tracey for p. and d.? Could be volcanic. Quote

So the group would not really be that "new" since Soskin and Cranshaw both have history with Rollins. Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 don't forget the 6 conga players. Can't have Sonny without them. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 17, 2013 Author Report Posted May 17, 2013 (edited) Mark Soskin played with Sonny for 14 years. I wonder if Sonny is getting to the point where he needs that fuller sound of a piano to back him? Edited May 17, 2013 by Hardbopjazz Quote
JSngry Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Since David Lee doesn't seem to be around anymore, get Tony Allen, get Sheila E., & bring back "The Cutting Edge" I'd tap (into) it. Again. Quote
mjzee Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Cranshaw's had an amazing run with Sonny. 51 years! Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Ten years ago I said Hamid Drake Today I still say it needs to happen at least once Quote
Blue Train Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 (edited) I have seen him 8 times. As a result of the last three times I either saw, or bought tickets....I am not sure about seeing him with whomever at this point. Having said that. I really have never understood why he had a group of people that he seemed to play to down to at times. Like he didn't want to embarrass them. P.S. Sonnymmon for Two with Ornette Coleman. EN FUEGO! Not saying it was the best perofmance I have seen involving either of them....but come on. My age and Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman together. If they were just warming up.... Steve Reynolds Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 I think that Rollins playing on that track with Ornette is tremendous while I think Ornette is not quite with it. So at 80 he could have hung with Hamid do maybe he still can. I have always wanted to hear him with a great NOW drummer Quote
paul secor Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Probably two guys he doesn't have to pay very much. Quote
Gheorghe Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 I also thought maybe Mark Soskin. Hamid Drake would be a gas, I like him. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Ten years ago I said Hamid Drake Today I still say it needs to happen at least once Rollins/Parker/Drake + 1 Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Who would be the plus one? Adam Rudolph? Michael Zerang? How about Peter Evans Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 20, 2013 Author Report Posted May 20, 2013 Why not Al Foster? I have several recordings with Al Foster and one where Al never made it to the gig. He ended up getting arrested for marijuana possession while in Japan. Sonny went on that night without drums or precessions. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 I saw Sonny in Atlanta in the early 90s with Al Foster, along with piano and bass. Sonny and Foster were fantastic. The pianist was incompetent, and the bassist not much better. Quote
