What do your parents like to listen to?

Classical, pop swing, Jobim (they've long liked Jobim and I'm getting them to listen to a lot of Brazilian stuff, and they're liking it).

So they might like Prez. Hang in there. You're obviously fighting the good fight.

I've tried Basie and Basieites on them before and they aren't that hip. ;)

Anyway, I'll get to it one of these mornings before I go off to their place, or evenings before I get to bed. I have about an hour of listening/watching time twice a day at my place and I've mostly been watching things from the DVR that my girlfriend also watches so we can talk to them on the phone.

I'm sure the Pres is good and in part I think I'm subconsciously postponing the listening because it's new Pres and how many more times will there be new Pres?

Has anyone mentioned that Connie Kay is great on the Prez in Boston? Hard swinging crackling bebop drumming. If you only think of MJQ when you hear his name, then listen to this one. Kenny Drew is good as always, but Horace really gets it down. Joe Schulman does a good job too.

Trust me - when they're gone, you'll smile at the memories of them being made happy by that music, no matter how much to your liking it may or may not be at the time.

At some point, the music doesn't matter any more, or at least not as much as the happiness it brings to people you love. I've got a stack of my folks' old records that I'll probably never listen to (and a smaller stack that I'll never stop listening to), and it doesn't matter that most of them are what I would objectively classify as crap. All I have to do is look at them and I smile out loud.

Good enough.

Maybe. Objects so far haven't worked that way with me. It's hard to find joy in the objects I have of my late wife. We're all different.

Regardless, I don't want to continue to talk about my trials and tribulations. Pres had his, you have yours. I'm glad to hear the sound quality is really good on this new release and it's wonderful to have "new" Pres.

Yes, Connie Kay was a real "burner" in his earliest recorded appearances. I remember first hearing him with a Miles group live and saying out loud "Is that really Connie Kay?"

I've been enjoying my copy quite a bit. There is maybe nothing here as earth shattering as some of the broadcasts from the same year that we have from Savoy Ballroom (NYC) and the Argyle Lounge (Chicago). But Pres is in fine form and the CD sounds excellent.

Are those other broadcasts available on cd?

A biggish chunk of the Savoy Ballroom material is on this set (disc 2 tracks 11-20, I think):

Some don't like the sound, I think it's okay, but I got low-fi equipment and am not that touchy.

There's about three CDs worth there.

As for the Argyle material, I see I only have a part of it, and with the rhythm section given as unknown - but some more details are to be found here:

http://www.jazzdisco.org/kenny-drew/discography/#500402

The above Savoy set is complete only as far as studio material goes, I guess (or it might contain all the Savoy stuff that's ever been out on Savoy, which again is not the entire material).

Guess I got to look for this material, then!

The Savoy is out in the internets, or as Mr. Sangrey sez: the internet is your friend :)

Adding to Ubu's comments, the Argyle Lounge concert is the one that has been issued on Savoy in several forms over the years. It was released on CD first as from the "Jazz Immortal Series." It was then included in somewhat better sound on the 2-disc complete Savoy recordings. it was also reissued on LP by Savoy in the 1970s as "Pres Lives." That was the first way that I obtained it. The rhythm section is Kenny Drew, Joe Shulman, and Jo Jones.

As Ubu writes, there are various CDs that contains parts of the Savoy Ballroom broadcasts. That includes the one on Charlie Parker records (Pres) and the Archives of Jazz Vol. 1 release. The Japanese box set (Complete Perfect Collection) contains 3 full CDs of mostly great Pres from those broadcasts. I have King Ubu to thank for hooking me up with that. :)

Oh, I've had Mobley's "Slice" here for a few years ... but it's the last one I don't know. Can't yet bring myself to listen to it. No more new Mobley to discover after it - that will be a very sad day.

That's why I've never picked up that early Max Roach side.
