Why is this topic OUTSIDE the music section?

And how about some nicely non-P.C. 40s/50s stuff?

"Explicit" (what an EXCEEDINGLY puritanly silly term in ANY era!) lyrics were not limited to the 20s AFAIK ;) and in a way seem to have been just as revolting to the sedate set in the post-WWII years (witness the crossover of the music to white listening audiences - and the reactions by the teens' elders - when R'n'R was born ;)).

Some of the more obvious ones:

and so on ...

BTW, as for Lucille Bogan's Shave Em Dry, the respective chapter of Paul Oliver's "Screening The Blues" would make for VERY interesting reading and for more versions of that song.

there's a much better-sounding Shave em Dry from the Sony Legacy issue of her work; I know because I found it for them and restored it - along with another she did that is equally wild, called When the Cows Come Home. I also have a very dirty Gene Autry, one-off, that I have not done anything with, but which may already have been bootleged.

The quality of this YouTube upload isn't even close to the original. Larry Hiller and I were amazed when we first heard it while working on the Columbia LP reissue. Considering the equipment used in 1931, those Columbia engineers were capable of some truly impressive work.

BTW, Allan, where/when did you find "Shave 'em Dry"? There was a really good master at the old Columbia plant. Larry Hiller and I made it better with his half-Dolby method and I placed it (as well as a straight transfer) in Columbia's Iron Mountain vault, but—for inexplicable reasons—the Legacy people never used it. Ditto the entire Bessie Smith output—it was there for future reissue engineers to use as raw material. Listening to the Legacy CD releases, they obviously didn't.

Larry Cohn heard that I had a relatively clean copy of Shave it Dry and gave me a call - as for my source - can't say publicly; I'll give you a call this weekend.
