sgcim Posted May 11, 2013 Report Posted May 11, 2013 Thank you, Colin! You won't regret this. I have my lab set up with endless loops of Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Babbitt, Boulez, Riegger, etc... Now, if we could just get your signature on some of our release forms, we could get started by the beginning of next week. No, don't bother to read them; they're really just dull, legalistic forms, absolving us of all responsibility for whatever uh, consequenses of our little study... We'll send the Krugermobile to pick the little tyke up bright and early Monday morning. No, don't thank us; remember, there is SCIENCE, and then there is everything else... Doctor Warren Kruger Quote

Doctor Warren Kruger Well, I think I might've tainted the sample with some Ellington and Prez here and there. Next time, though! Really though, I do hope my son grows up with an appreciation for jazz, or at least at fondness for having grown up around it. But we'll see when we see. Quote
StarThrower Posted May 11, 2013 Author Report Posted May 11, 2013 I agree with Hot Ptah that it is pretty easy to overwhelm a kid, and I really do question those members who would push free jazz on a child. I think they would in nearly all cases hate it. Generally kids that age like melodic music with hooks and they simply won't appreciate anything with either polyrhythms or essentially a-rhythmic music. Why do people keep using the word "push" here? As if exposing kids to music, culture, etcetera is the domain of zealots. And if you're going to assume that kids like hooks and catchy melodies (who doesn't?) there's plenty to be found on jazz recordings of all kinds. To my mind, this is one of the best kept secrets about jazz when it comes to the general public. So many beautiful melodies to enjoy from Monk, Duke, Coltrane, Mingus, Horace Silver, Thad Jones, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Weather Report, Pat Metheny, MJQ, Tad Dameron, Wes Montgomery, Wayne Shorter, Oliver Nelson, and on and on...
