Larry Kart Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Here's a clip of that young female French clarinetist I was thinking of but whose name I couldn't recall. She's Aurelie Tropez. http://www.reedwarmers.com/uk/aurelie-tropez-biography.html Quote
fasstrack Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Anat Cohen evidence -- Some very rhythmically inept playing at times IMO: Wasn't inept, just corny as hell. Guess she figured she had to do her cutsie BG bit on that one . Lame. Quote
John Litweiler Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Hey, thanks for Aurelie Tropez, Larry. I like Paul Asaro, the piano player, too. He's one of the Fat Babies. His CD of Fats Waller songs is due one of these days. I heard Les Rois du Fox-Trot in Paris in 2010. Michel BEscont played the clarinet solos, no Marq et on that band. Their "Deep Creek Blues" was mostly an exact replica of Morton's. Great piece. Has anyone heard Alain Marquet in recent yeaars? Quote

There's lots of post-Les Petit work from Marquet on YouTube, but it seems much more variable to me (in part because of so-so on location video recordings) than what he did with Morel's bands, where everything was top notch. At least one latter-day Marquet performance with the Paris Washboard Band captures some of the former magic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpD-Tp__AME Quote

Maybe not outright flubs, but things get downright vague/insecure/awkward/anomalous rhythmically at any number of spots -- at .45, at 1.00, at 1:19, at 1:33, and at 2:25 and for a fair while after that IMO. king ubu Posted May 13, 2013 Report Posted May 13, 2013 Sheesh! Some yurpeen dailys have a weekly selection of NYTimes articles (in english,of course) added ... and that totally clueless article made the cut - I can't quite believe that! And --- ouch, Larry, that video hurts the eyes and ears! Some of you may remember I once accused Don Byron of lack of clarinet technique, but by comparison he's a grand master in any respect. This is extremely awkward - and yes, most corny, too. Quote
JSngry Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 I've had Cohen's Chiaroscuro on my iPod for walking yesterday and today, just to see what all the stink was about, and this has led me to three conclusions: "Stink" is not an inappropriate word. Not for ability, but for results. I walk faster when I'm pissed off The oddest thing of all - her playing reminds me in some imprecise yet exact way of the guy who played alto with SpyroGyra back in the day. As a result, this whole album puts me in mind of, more than anything else, "Smooth Jazz" before it was actually called that. So, yeah, I don't need any of all that, except for the faster walking. But I can get that some otherbetter way. and yeah - SpyroGyra. Exactly. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Was it really necessary to listen twice or did you have no better way to attain a faster walking pace at that moment? Quote
JSngry Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 My walking is an activity I've just recently been able to resume, so I do a mile at a time several times per day, which takes me about 10-15 minutes. so it's taken this long to get through the entire album. And I did want to get through the entire album, and as it turns out 10-15 minutes at a time is probably the best (only?) way for me to do that. I mean, I hate to be so dark on an obviously very talented individual, but...talent is wonderful, admirable, but so is a good bowel movement. Meaning just that not everything that is good is going to be enthusiastically received by everybody when offered for sharing. Quote

JSngry Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 I mean no personal or professional disrespect, it's just all..."Have A Nice Day" & "Aren't We All So HUMAN", and well, ok, you too, and of course, sure we are, but...so what? Then what? Then we dance? Then we cry? Then we take to the stage? Again? Really? Too many people have stopped asking "then what?" in any sense other than to keep on doing the same old same old, and that's just not the answer I'm looking for here. So...yeah. SpyroGyra. Harmless AND ineffective. Quote

JSngry Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Well, saxophone was my first instrument, but I still played tuba my senior year. Quote
