paul secor Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 Mr. Getz had his shot and I thought it would be interesting to give Mr. Mitchell his. I'll go with his first (at least chronologically): Before There was Sound (Nessa) If I could pick another: Solo [3] (Mutable) Quote
Uncle Skid Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) I will always have a soft spot for Snurdy McGurdy and her Dancin' Shoes (Nessa). My first exposure to his Mr. Mitchell's music, and at the time, I had never heard anything quite like it. It took me awhile to "get" it... but to this day, "Sing Song" gives me chills. The slow yet relentless building that finally releases at 6:24 is one of my all-time favorite musical moments. Great idea for a thread, looking forward to more responses. Edited to add: the alternate take of "Ornette" on Sound is also a favorite. The cello.... YES!!! Edited May 5, 2013 by Uncle Skid Quote
jlhoots Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 I presume we can use an AEC recording, so I'll say People In Sorrow. Quote
Joe Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 Not my favorite -- I can't pick one; his discography is just too diverse -- but I will say that THIS DANCE IS FOR STEVE MCCALL is some rather under-rated Roscoe... http://www.allmusic.com/album/this-dance-is-for-steve-mccall-mw0000621807 Quote
Larry Kart Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 Can't pick one -- five would be "Nonaah," "L-R-G/The Maze, etc.", "Sound," "Congliptious," and "Old/Quartet." And I can think of many more. Quote
JSngry Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 All of them? Yes? But if not JUST one, let me put in a plug for THIS one: Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 (edited) Les Stances a Sophie Edited May 6, 2013 by Steve Reynolds Quote
John Litweiler Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 Roscoe Mitchell's alto solo that starts about 1/3 of the way through "Number One" and after a gong crash, turns into a fierce duet with Lester Bowie. Quote
colinmce Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 Not my favorite -- I can't pick one; his discography is just too diverse -- but I will say that THIS DANCE IS FOR STEVE MCCALL is some rather under-rated Roscoe... http://www.allmusic.com/album/this-dance-is-for-steve-mccall-mw0000621807 I was gonna say this, though my real #1 is Conglipitous. Still have much of his output to hear, though. The Flow of Things is another fine Black Saint. Relentless as hell. Quote
Clunky Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 (edited) Nonaah- nothing else like it in my collection Edited May 6, 2013 by Clunky Quote
king ubu Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 Nonaah, Sound, Snurdy but then I've still got plenty of gaps ... Quote
BeBop Posted May 6, 2013 Report Posted May 6, 2013 Tough one, but I'd choose "Sound". (Haven't heard "Before...") Snurdy McGurdy is another nice one, and I like any duo stuff, of which there is - blessedly - much. Quote
