He was 72. Known for his distinctive intense, rhythmic guitar style and soulful covers of pop and folk songs, Havens toured and recorded music for over 40 years before retiring from the road three years ago." colinmce Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Very sad news. I've been a fan since watching Woodstock when I was 10. Mixed Bag and 1983 are seriously great records and were never heard as widely as they ought to be. Ditto Live at the Cellar Door and the Great Blind Degree. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 That really sucks, RIP. He had an incredible voice and fantastic percussive guitar style, my mom saw him live maybe 6 years ago. "Mixed Bag" is a great record. Quote
mjzee Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 RIP, Richie. Another great New York City musician gone. Quote
sgcim Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Very sad to hear... "Mixed Bag" was one of my fave LPs of all-time, every track a masterwork. He was a very kind and generous human being according to my childhood BF's parents, who worked with him at a Summer Camp in upstate NY. There's nobody to replace people like this... RIP, Richie... Christiern Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 A very gentle, soft spoken man. I did two interviews with him, one of which was in my apartment. He brought with him an instrument that seemed as long as he was tall. I hope he had a good life. Quote
mjzee Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 He had a very unusual way of playing the guitar, pressing his thumb across all 6 strings. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 He did a great version of Vigilante Man at the Carnegie Hall Tribute to Woody Guthrie concert but it's not on the CD version, just the lp. I am lucky to have that one. Quote
skeith Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Loved his music. In addition to writing some pretty great songs, I loved the way he reharmonized and changed the melodies of songs that others had written.... he was just brilliant. Quote
fasstrack Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Wow. I heard him sing Freedom live at Woodstock. Had a voice you could pick out in 2 seconds. All the iconic figures of my generation are going. Sad. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Sad news - and sorry to hear this. RIP. Quote
