Hardbopjazz Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 I saw this commercial and said the background music like something I've heard. I didn't figure out it was Lee Morgan. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 I saw that some weeks back, and thought that was great. Quote
JSngry Posted April 20, 2013 Author Report Posted April 20, 2013 It's actually Blakey's record, but it's Lee's tune "Calling Miss Khadija". Quote
Morganized Posted April 20, 2013 Report Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) And so D~n good ! It's actually Blakey's record, but it's Lee's tune "Calling Miss Khadija". Edited April 20, 2013 by Morganized Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 University of Phoenix is a dubious institution but hey, kudos on the music! Great tune. Quote
mjzee Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 Can we create a compilation of Lee Morgan tracks not appearing on his own albums? Prompted by listening to Joe Henderson's Mode For Joe, and hearing Lee's composition Free Wheelin'. Quote
marcello Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I knew "Miss Khadija". She was bassist Steve Davis' wife and McCoy Tyner's sister in law. Quote
ValerieB Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I knew "Miss Khadija". She was bassist Steve Davis' wife and McCoy Tyner's sister in law. I think I knew her too if she's the same lady who owned a dress shop on St. Mark's Pl. in the '60s right near the Five Spot. i'm wondering who gets royalties on Lee's tunes. Quote
Stereojack Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I heard this last night. Usually I mute ads or fast forward through them, but caught the tail end of this and backed up to hear the whole thing. Not a lot there, but it's nice that somebody at Madison Avenue remembers. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 anyone ever seen the original lee commerical, i wonder if it exists Quote
Stereojack Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 anyone ever seen the original lee commerical, i wonder if it exists I assume you mean the Dodge commercial featuring "The Sidewinder"? I saw it multiple time in the mid 1960's, but I seem to recall that it did not use Lee's recording of the tune. Somebody may correct me on this. Quote
JSngry Posted April 23, 2013 Author Report Posted April 23, 2013 (edited) Don't know if this is the original, but... And hey, here's Phil Woods! Edited April 23, 2013 by JSngry Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 JImmy Smith's 'Organ grinder swing' was used in several Renault ads around 2000. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aF8wsUL6is There was another using the record, with a Clio smashing through a huge pane of glass as Grady Tate crashed his cymbal to push JOS into an even higher chorus, but I can't find it.
