GA Russell Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Pat Summerall has died at age 82. I had his bubble gum card in 1960 when he was with the Giants. RIP. http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2013/04/16/veteran-sports-broadcaster-pat-summerall-dies/ Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Liked hearing his voice. Under the circumstances I am glad he lasted this long. Thanks Pat. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 In honor of Pat Summerall, at 10pET ESPN2 airs The Greatest Game Ever Played doc on 1958 Colts/Giants Championship. Quote
paul secor Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Even though he did other things, I still think of him as a place kicker with the Giants when I was young. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 pat summerall hosted 26 masters golf events. i saw and enjoyed most of them. http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golftalkcentral/former-masters-announcer-summerall-dies-at-82/ Quote

Jazzmoose Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 I'm a tad too young to remember his playing days, but he was one of those sports announcers that made it feel like game day whenever you heard him speak. Quote
JSngry Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Didn't like him at first, much preferred the minimalism of Ray Scott. Summerall just seemed too damn corporate-happychatty (Westinghouse! Gee YEAH! Nice catch too!). But hell, you hear anybody that often for that many years, and their annoyances can become appealing. Such was the case with Summerall, eventually evolving into legendom as he himself developed a little more depth as time worked its magic (or whatever it is that time works...).. RIP, and thanks. alocispepraluger102 Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 IMO Pat and Madden were the best football announce team of them all, then Buck and Stram. Quote

No one broadcasts in that minimal style anymore, and it's a great loss. Ray Scott, I haven't thought of him in years, but he was a great one. The one broadcasting that I thought was great, but no seems to even remember the tandem -- Curt Gowdy and Don Meredith, Gowdy was another great announcer. Geesh, I feel old remembering all these guys. Quote
JSngry Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 I don't remember Gowdy/Meredith...when/where was that? Quote
GA Russell Posted April 17, 2013 Author Report Posted April 17, 2013 My favorite was Charlie Jones and anybody. Next was Curt Gowdy with Paul Chrisman. Quote
Matthew Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 I don't remember Gowdy/Meredith...when/where was that? NBC for the 1975 & 1976 season. In fact, weren't they the announcers for the famous Oakland/Miami game, that ended the Dolphins winning streak? Quote
JSngry Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 Thanks. Had only sporadic tv access during that time...no wonder I don't remember them! Quote
Quincy Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 (edited) I don't remember Gowdy/Meredith...when/where was that? NBC for the 1975 & 1976 season. In fact, weren't they the announcers for the famous Oakland/Miami game, that ended the Dolphins winning streak? Yes! (A non-Marv Albert "yes" there - though I like Marv fine). A couple of months ago I was watching a glory of the Raiders DVD since there's no been no glory since the Tuck Game and I was happily surprised to hear Don there after the "sea of hands" catch. That game is still my all-time favorite. I also loved Curt paired with Tony Kubek for baseball. When I get grumpy about young Buck's somewhat shrill tone I point to Pat Summerall as the example of what I'd like back in announcing. I was initially disappointed when they broke up the Summerall-Brookshier combo and paired Pat with my old Raider coach. I wasn't sure that guy would amount to anything as a color guy with his "boom" and all that. Edited April 17, 2013 by Quincy Quote

He and Brookshier were the top pair, but few of the obits I've been reading have even mentioned that. Quote
Blue Train Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 I always enjoyed him and John Madden. Be well!. Quote

JSngry Posted April 18, 2013 Report Posted April 18, 2013 Yes, Prestonwood Baptist, a church that feels like a stadium (or so I've been told): I've driven by it many times, and it kinda looks like one from the outside too: Quote
