clifford_thornton Posted April 11, 2013 Author Report Posted April 11, 2013 Heikki Sarmanto (pretty much anything), Ted Daniel "Tapestry," Louie Belogenis/Mike Bisio/Sunny Murray (I wrote the notes), Po Band, Warren Smith, Juma. The reissued jazz titles tend to be somewhat stronger than the new releases but for like $5 or whatever, no complaints. I don't know much of the electronic/experimental stuff he's put out though the acoustic/electro-acoustic discs from Katherine Young and Andrew Raffo Dewar are excellent. Quote
colinmce Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 Shit, lousy time to be broke. Any idea how long this will go? Next by Bynum/Morris/Schoenbeck is very strong. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2013 Author Report Posted April 12, 2013 Yeah, I like the Bynum/Morris/Schoenbeck too. Also the Wooley/Lonberg-Holm/Roebke. I don't know how long the sale will go on but since the dude & his family are moving house it might be more than two weeks. Just sayin'. Quote
jlhoots Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 Any recommendations? Sounds Of Liberation Quote
JETman Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 Any recommendations? FAB Trio - Live in Amsterdam Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 FAB Trio, Old Dog, Nu Band, the Ted Daniel, Byard Lancasters, the Juma Sultan cd, Henry Grimes & Rashid Ali, Joe Chambers, Arnold Cheatham. David Hurley's Outer Nebula is a surprise, recommended as well, as Eero Kovistoinen's 3rd version. Lots of good stuff here. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2013 Author Report Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) Oh right, the Arni Cheatham - forgot about that one. Great stuff. If you can't afford or don't want to commit to the Eremite box (w/ diff. material), the Porter Juma set is a fine intro. Edited April 12, 2013 by clifford_thornton Quote
Д.Д. Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 Matt Bauder is a good one. Porter has generous sounds samples for their releases. Quote
alankin Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 Some of the samples on the Odean Pope CDs sound interesting. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 13, 2013 Author Report Posted April 13, 2013 Yeah, I like the trio disc. Quote
king ubu Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Got my package, ordered last Friday - amazingly fast! These all look very nice. Will take me a while to squeeze them in between my classical listening schedule, but I'm looking forward a lot (and thank you guys for the recommendations, I'd have skipped the Belogenis for sure, if I hadn't seen it mentioned here). Also, Luke was kind enough to add both freebies to my order, which amounted to quite a bit less than 100$, even including shipping. Now that's great service! Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Dunmall-Grimes-Cyrille GREAT! Quote
king ubu Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 too late But I'm almost through with the Ted Daniel - and that one's mighty fine! Rather trippy, with thick rhodes (including wah-wah and echo-plex), beat isn't as important here as it was with Miles, the music sounds somewhat more open, but also, if that makes sense, somewhat more "flat"? I'm enjoying it immensely, for sure! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 Whaddya mean too late? I'm sure it is still going on! The Ted Daniel is a killer album. I have it on LP and am glad Porter ensured its easier availability by putting it out on CD. Quote
king ubu Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 just that my fairly big order is aleady here ... will see if I put in another one, but that wasn't actually the plan Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 Ah I didn't scroll up, now I see. Luke is a great dude. Quote
alankin Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 Yeah, quick shipment & he threw in a couple extra CDs. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 25, 2013 Author Report Posted April 25, 2013 Maybe they're not for everybody (i.e., non-jazz, non-soul/funk) but I find it disheartening that the Natural Food and Birigwa CDs were almost unmovable - I have the original Seeds LPs and really enjoy them. The Birigwa is beautiful, in particular. Quote
colinmce Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 I had my eye on those. I'd so like to place an order, but I know now's not the time ... FWIW, I also love the Jeweled Antler material. I listened to a lot of that at the time, and it was always my favorite stuff to come out of the early 2000's "freak folk" thing. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 27, 2013 Author Report Posted April 27, 2013 Yeah, some of that is pretty cool indeed. Quote
