Aggie87 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 From musictap: Island Records will spruce up Exodus from Bob Marley and the Wailers as a Special 30th Anniversary Edition. This reissue is expected on November 20. Not sure how this will differ from the current deluxe edition, which is a nice package already. Maybe a reissue with a bonus dvd, like the Sound + Vision edition of Legend? Quote

"Exodus" is not one of my fave Marley's album, so I found the double cds useless. I'd prefer a double cds of "Burnin". The bass is pumped up to the extreme compared to the original vinyl, and even compared with the EP you could find in DJ's store some years ago. Overall a comprensible remastering choice for this kind of music. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I think the remasters are a boom-fest, with flabby, over-pronounced bass all over the place. I can't even play them in my car because the bass is so loud it distorts the small speakers. Give me the original CDs any day. Quote
BruceH Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I've still got my original vinyls. Quote
porcy62 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I've still got my original vinyls. Stick to them. Expecially if are original UK pressings. Quote
WD45 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 that live show that appears on the second disc of Exodus is like a freight train -- when that band got rolling [no pun intended] on the tune Exodus, there was no stopping them. Love that. Quote

Love that. Agree, but why should I buy another copy of "Exodus"? Issuing a DOUBLE LIVE album of the stuff, that should be the way. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Marley is someone I haven't got round to yet. I've only got a cheapo CD compilation. Seeing what Porcy says, I note that my local second hand shop has some orig LPs. So what about some hints on which to buy first, folks? MG Quote
sal Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I've got all the single CD reissues....they are among the true treasures of my collection. Quote

(and the double live Lp "Babylon By Bus": it has his moments, plus the most famous Marley's songs, IMHO,) If you buy used vinyl doublecheck the condition: those rastafanatics used to be very stoned when they played records. German and Dutch pressings are good as usual. Avoid the latest reissues, digitally remastered with the very same boom-fest of the cd. And look for some lost weed inside the cover... What I'd suggest if you don't mind to buy digital and if you're really interested in early Marley's works is this box set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=blen...;_encoding=UTF8 The true original Marley and the Wailers before he became a Rockstar. Trenchtown taste 100%. All this Upsetters sets are generally interesting, Lee Perry was the Goodfather of the Raggae, though I fully listened to the Marley's box only. P.S. If you find an original "Catch A Fire" with original "Zippo" cover, at a decent price and in good condition, I would be interested too. Edited October 24, 2007 by porcy62 Quote

Never heard about weed - no doubts that it could happen - but a friend of mine who used to work for a record company/distributor told me a story about an LP on a small Jamaican label being returned because a chocolate chip was pressed in the vinyl. mr jazz Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 My MFSL of Exodus sounds good to me. Hasn't Bablyon by Bus been remastered? What's the opinion on that one? Quote

Just joking, but gatefold labels were perfect for rolling joint...and jewelcase cd cover are good for cocaine's lines...one of the reason to prefer vinyl. Quote

Aggie87 Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 A little more info on the new reissue of Exodus: Island plans the 30th Anniversary release of Exodus from Bob Marley and the Wailers, scheduling the album for November 20. This magnificent album that contained “Waiting in Vain,” “Jamming,” and “One Love,” will be available in several forms. The first is the single CD set, while the second, and more preferable package is the DVD-sized Casebound Book that contains the CD and a DVD. The DVD is the 12-performance track Live at the Rainbow set. Originally released in 1977 as Bob Marley was in exile in the UK due to an assassination attempt on his life in Jamaica, this set represents great Marley music. I've already got the 2 disc deluxe edition, so I'm not sure if this appeals to me very much. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 I would bet a bundle that this disc will be max'ed out, with NO dynamic range at all. CD mastering has reached an all time low for the big labels. Just watch. It will be brick-walled. Quote

They are so pumped that they could sound even without a cd player, actually if you put the ears on the jewel case you can hear the music without playing them. Quote
eeegor Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 While I'm not a fan of Bob Marley (give me Ken Boothe, Trinity, Dilinger etc.), it seems Stereophile has given the re-issue of 'Exodus' a thumbs up. Performance and sonics get 5/5. That said, it is Stereophile we're talking about here... Quote

.:.impossible Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Soul Shakedown and Sun Is Shining are personal favorites. I haven't listened to much of Wailers stuff in a long time. Some nice stuff up on youtube... I know this is a Tosh feature, but the groove! Quote
sal Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 "Time Will Tell" is a personal fav. Escapes me what album its on, maybe Kaya? Quote
captainwrong Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Thought I'd throw this out there, since I noticed it was being talked about above. The "original Jamaican version" of "Catch a Fire" is still a mythical animal that no one knows for sure if it exists or not. When I was last looking into it, even Marley experts had never actually seen a copy. Conventional wisdom says it's out there, but even Steffens & Pierson's Definitive Discography list the exact same mixes appearing on Tuff Gong LP 101 as the the version the rest of the world got. So, what's on the deluxe CD? A 2001 remix approximating what a Jamaican mix would have sounded like. Nice job, but I think Universal fudges the facts a little in the case of this issue. I know many don't like 'em, but I think the overdubs add to the album. Marley was certainty in favor of them and the music was recorded with holes for the slide guitar and whatnot. I would have been more interested in a set of dubs of the album than the "original Jamaican" remixes, but maybe that's just me. Quote
