robertoart Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 I didn't the gist of your post jsngry when I first read it... 'the drama of what the music is 'representing' as opposed to 'the maths of the changes'? Yes? ...well there is a kind of a 'Humanities-Maths' of 'the sound/expressive possibilities inherent in the horn that can 'represent' like no other. To me anyway. The best Shepp is gutwrenching and 'beautiful' like that. Quote
fasstrack Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Speaking of melodrama does anyone here know anything about the trilogy I mentioned earlier or any other Shepp plays? I wonder if they were performed anywhere else. Or were they merely another product of the militant-expressionistic late '60s-early '70s? Quote
StarThrower Posted April 6, 2013 Author Report Posted April 6, 2013 (edited) Thanks for the links to the older threads! I guess I missed out on the Attica Blues Big Band CD? I've never read about or seen a listing for that one anywhere. It's available direct from Futura/Marge Records in Paris http://futuramarge.free.fr/ Not the easiest site to navigate. Click "Blue Marge" and it's # "1001". I've bought directly from them via the website with no problem. They've got some great stuff, but I'm not sure how to put together an order at this site? There's no shopping cart. I really like the sound of the Mal Waldron trio date from 1970, and the Sam Rivers Crosscurrent. Those two plus the Shepp Big Band would be my initial order. The Ted Curson Pop Wine sounds great too! Edited April 6, 2013 by starthrower Quote

As I said, I've bought this way and had no problems. Edited April 7, 2013 by Head Man Quote
StarThrower Posted April 7, 2013 Author Report Posted April 7, 2013 ^^^^ Email sent. Will wait for their response. Thanks! Quote
colinmce Posted April 7, 2013 Report Posted April 7, 2013 What's available at any given moment may be spotty, but Dusty Groove keeps Marge/Futura albums steadily in stock, too. Quote
StarThrower Posted April 7, 2013 Author Report Posted April 7, 2013 Dusty Groove is great for being out of stock. Quote
colinmce Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 I've been burned many a time myself. That's a global market for you. Quote
JSngry Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 This is not that, but if you can find it, get it. Quote
StarThrower Posted June 8, 2013 Author Report Posted June 8, 2013 I sent a payment via PayPal to Futura/Marge for the Shepp Big Band CD and three others, but have heard nothing after 10 days. Quote
Head Man Posted June 8, 2013 Report Posted June 8, 2013 I sent a payment via PayPal to Futura/Marge for the Shepp Big Band CD and three others, but have heard nothing after 10 days. They don't usually confirm when an order has been dispatched so if you're worried then I would e-mail them to confirm it's been sent. I've bought from them on many occasions and had no problems. brownie Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 No need to worry. Marge is a very small organization. They take their time. You'll get your CDs.... Quote
StarThrower Posted June 11, 2013 Author Report Posted June 11, 2013 I received a package from Futura today. I'm enjoying the Shepp Big Band CD. Too bad they couldn't use the original album covers due to a legal dispute with the photographer. After a shopping spree, I now have five new Shepp titles including Fire Music; Steam; Yasmina/Poem For Malcolm; Antibes Festival; Attica Blues Big Band. Quote
Gheorghe Posted June 12, 2013 Report Posted June 12, 2013 Did Mr. Shepp retire? Had a look on his hp last week, no current activities..... Quote

HutchFan Posted October 24, 2020 Report Posted October 24, 2020 Picking up a long-dormant thread ... Just read an article about Archie Shepp on the Bandcamp site. Nothing out of this world. But worth a read: https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/archie-shepp-album-list Quote
Enterprise Server Posted October 25, 2020 Report Posted October 25, 2020 Nice article. Thanks for posting. I really like those early Shepp Impulse recordings. Those are my favorites and long with "The New York Contemporary Five "... Quote
Gheorghe Posted October 26, 2020 Report Posted October 26, 2020 I saw Archie Shepp live for the first time when "Paris Concert" and "Bird Fire" came out. It was with the great german/french pianist Siegfried Kessler, Clifford Jarvis and maybe Bob Cunningham on bass, but it could also be a japanese bass player, it think that it was, it was again at the no more existent "Kongress Haus" in 1050 Viena, a lot of concerts were there in the late 70´s, I think it´s a Billa Market now..... jlhoots Posted October 26, 2020 Report Posted October 26, 2020 I saw Shepp in Boston in the early 70's with Rudd, Johnson (tuba), Haden & Beaver Harris. Drove my wife crazy, but I loved it. Quote
felser Posted October 26, 2020 Report Posted October 26, 2020 Saw him at the Foxhole Cafe in the mid-70's. Definitely Beaver Harris, and I believe Dave Burrell and Cameron Brown. They tore the roof off the building, especially on "African Drums". Quote
