David Ayers Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 I've just ordered the 'Sun Ship' (as well as a few of the other LP sets). It will be interesting to see how it compares with my early-70s (original?) LP. The original LP is awful! Quote
Leeway Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 I too would be interested in the sound of these LPs. From the accompanying blurb on the Mosaic site, it would seem this is an analog production, but I'm not entirely sure about that. The little bit at the end about "remixed" and "remastered" raises some question marks for me. It might all be great, so hopefully we can get a report on that. BTW, Mosaic has reduced the price to $80 for the month of February, Quote
sidewinder Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) I've just ordered the 'Sun Ship' (as well as a few of the other LP sets). It will be interesting to see how it compares with my early-70s (original?) LP. The original LP is awful! Too damn right ! Thin vinyl and semi-warped from the 'ABC' era. The Mosaic is going to be a revelation after that. Edited February 18, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 The more I consider this, the harder time I'm having convincing myself to get it. The one thing I've noticed over the years is that the "extended/complete/deluxe" editions of releases that are mostly padded with alt. takes/false starts/breakdowns get very little play in my house after the initial listen. This should be a no brainer, especially considering I love his music so much that my sons middle name is Coltrane, but I just ain't feeling it. Quote
David Ayers Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 It is actually quite irritating, this set, but.... Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 And it's my second favorite Jazz album of all time. Still can't see bothering... Quote
David Ayers Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Well, there are some complete alternates which are interesting to hear and the sound is fine, so.... Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 You'd make a horrible salesman. Quote
bogdan101 Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 I got this with the 10% off from Mosaic, and listened to the first 2 lp's today. Very interesting to have the "fly on the studio wall" perspective and listen to the various bits and false starts and incomplete takes. It also gives an idea of how the group worked through their recording sessions; there is usually one full alternate take for each piece that is done as a run through, and one take that is intended to be the released version. There are some interesting differences between the "rehearsal" and the "official" takes; in the rehearsals, the play is more economical, linear and sparse. For the release takes they go in "full on" mode, Elvin Jones in particular is significantly more exuberant and "showy". The sound is variable, again with the official release takes sounding better and with a bit more ambiance and reverb. I'm wondering if the released takes were mastered differently, and that carried over into this issue? All in all it's great, I'm happy I got it. And of course, as usual, a very nice booklet with high quality photos. Quote
