Blue Train Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 (edited) Jason Heyward hit in the jaw with a 90mph fastball That had to f-/:;ing hurt...... Thankfully, he was able to move his head enough for it to first hit the side of the helmet, which along with moving his head in the opposite direction...greatly dissipated the force to his jaw....and still ended up with a fracture in two places in his jaw. Tim McG Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Giants vs. Pirates tonight. Ugh. Is it next season yet? Quote
JSngry Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 You know who's gonna kill somebody at this current rate? Tanner Scheppers. Dude likes to work high and tight anyway (which is, of course, legit), but either he lets hangovers get the best of him every once in a while or else he just loses his nerve. Whatever it is, it's just a matter of time. Last night against the Astros was ugly. Ugly and scary. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Nice video clip of Ichiro Suzuki getting his 4000th hit the other night: http://wapc.mlb.com/nyy/play/?content_id=29917839&query=suzuki After the game he said he was surprised and moved when his teammates all came out to congratulate him, and you can see that in the way he smiles as he's getting hugged. I also enjoyed the second shot you see of Blue Jays second baseman Munenori Kawasaki, who has looked up to Suzuki as a role model. Quote
Blue Train Posted August 23, 2013 Report Posted August 23, 2013 Anyone read Pete Rose's response to it? Pure Pete Rose. Quote

GA Russell Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 On this date... 1940 - Ted Williams pitched the last two innings for the Red Sox against Detroit at Fenway Park. He allowed one run on three hits, but struck out Rudy York on three pitches. The Tigers, behind Tommy Bridges, won 12-1. Quote
Tim McG Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 Giants win the series against the Pirates. Now how about that? [my apologies to Mel Allen] Quote
Blue Train Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) Most profitable team in MLB history....this year's Astros. They're going to make more in profit than the last 6 Champions combined did those years. That's on top of the $70 million Crane was paid to move to the AL. WTF? incentive does Crane have to pay to win? There is a luxury tax ....there should be some sort of minimum on team payroll. This year including bonuses the Astros' payroll is about $7+ million less than the Yankees are paying Mr. April. In fact as a team....they don't even crack the top 10 yearly salaries for players. Mike Schwartz Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Not only did Barry Bonds obviously take "the clear and the cream" as he admitted but didn't know what the stuff was [supposedly] but he was allowed to wear body armor, the type of which that was banned while he was a player and that other batters could nor use, yet got a personal pass to continue until the end. Other than the possibility of getting hit in the head, he could give a crap about getting hit....would bounce off him without even a wince and would take the base while unwrapping that huge (now illegal) device. Soulstation1 Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 IMO Nobody will ever get close to breaking Rose's career hit total 20 years of 200 hits and you're still short.... Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Tough break for Matt Harvey. Looks like Tommy John Surgery for the Met ace. Quote

In this day an age when the HR is the be-all to end-all because of the Barroid Era....you have to be a mostly non-HR hitter. Rafael Palmeiro is the single one of the Barroids that can be found on the 3000+ list. Barroid with all the he intaked and elbow armor only made it to 2935 hits in 22-years. Only a total homer doesn't get what is wrong with the numbers. Edited August 27, 2013 by Blue Train Quote

Blue Train Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) Tough break for Matt Harvey. Looks like Tommy John Surgery for the Met ace. A third of the current pitchers have had it. The majority of the time it happens after the All-Star break. Interestingly, many/most pitched in the the one worthless game in the season....that now decides which league has more home games in the World Series. Edited August 27, 2013 by Blue Train Quote

Well, supposedly, they are spending on the minor league side, and have some very good arms right now...from mlbtraderumors.com Also from Galloway's piece, he notes that the Rangers rate four Astros starting pitchers as "double-plus prospects" but a Rangers source wonders if the young starters' development is being harmed by Houston's league-worst bullpen. “The owner down there [Jim Crane] needs to get off his wallet and spend some money for some veteran bullpen guys next season,” the Rangers source said. “Those kid starters have a future, but they are being beaten up mentally by pitching well and never getting a win out of it.” Houston manager Bo Porter recently said that the Astros will look to add relief pitching help this winter. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/08/al-west-links-mariners-trout-young.html Quote

While I think TJ surgery is becoming more common place - just ask the fans of the Rangers, Nats, or Braves - to say that 1/3 of all MLB pitchers have had that procedure done is a bit of an exaggeration. To the best of my knowledge none of the pitchers on the Phillies current 40 man roster have ever had TJ surgery. Of all of the pitchers that have thrown for the Phillies this season(that's more than 20) only 1 that I know of - Mike Adams - has had it. Tough break for the kid. I enjoyed watching him pitch even when he was crushing my team. Quote

From July 2013 One-third of current MLB pitchers have had Tommy John surgery. Of the about 360 who started the season, 124 share the all-too-familiar triangular scar. How surprising is this number? It stunned me! In recent talks with baseball officials, none guessed more than the one-in-nine number I had often seen quoted over the last decade (and quoted myself). Worse, none of us had any idea when this change had happened or noticed the acceleration. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1699659-the-alarming-increase-in-mlb-pitchers-whove-had-tommy-john-surgery Edited August 27, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
