These will likely be similar to the previous Pres and JATP cheapo reissues ... didn't get them as I've got the old versions (same for these two coming ones), but they had cheaper packaging ... not sure how encompassing the booklets are, but while the JATP had a massive one in its original edition (but it still lacks a session-by-session commentary, which I'd have enjoyed!), the Pres a fairly big one wasting lots of space for fancy (and nice) design, the Parker and Brownie box don't have that big booklets, so they might be included again?

Maybe someone here has the JATP or Pres boxes and can chime in?

Addition: since they're Universal Italy produced (or so it seems), they might be identical, package-wise, to the Universal sets of previous Fantasy boxes (i.e. Chet Baker on Riverside, Sonny Rollins on Prestige, Monk on Riverside etc.).

The only one of those I ever got was the Rollins, which had a minimal booklet with a double page on each album, one side displaying the original front cover, the other listing all infos in the usual Fantasy/OJCCD style. No notes whatsoever.

All that stuff is surely PD in Europe now. I dare say one of the Euro companies doing boxes might reissue the stuff. I think I wouldn't mind the JATP set for a few quid.

Yes, that's what Universal (who is distributing Fantasy/Concord over here) is doing ... there's loads of OJCs and Pablo discs in circulation again (or there was, maybe it was just one flood that is by now slowly ebbing off again?). Amazon.it has tons of them in the 4-6€ range, worth looking if you missed them. They look like regular OJCCDs but have the catalogue numbers changed (quite cheaply done on a computer, it seems) ... but they're the real deal and not Spanish vinyl or whatever rips.

These boxes fall into the same category, obviously. And there's no reason they shouldn't be doing this, as in fact this should always be first choice before looking to Fresh Sound or Lone Hill or any of those.

The bad thing is there seems to be no really good website where you can look for what should be around. jazzecho.de had some of the single discs listed, you can also try your luck here: http://www.universalmusic.it/jazz/artisti/

I have the 1944-49 JATP 10-CD set from Universal Italy. Nothing to complain about the sound, but the booklet is just a 12-page affair giving the session details, and that's all.

Got it through Amazon Germany a couple of years ago for a very low price which was so low that I did not mind ending up with a share of duplicates with what I haved on those Verve vinyl twofers from the 70s/early 80s. At that price the remaining (new to me) tracks still were a good buy at any rate.

I've got the 10CD JATP set on Membran very similar but not exactly what's on the Verve set and of course no personnel details or notes, but a little searching on the internet gets you all the necessary info. Thoroughly enjoyable.

As for the 10CD set: the Verve one had lots of previously unissued tracks that are hence PD only fifty (or seventy or Disney-Cliff-Maccartny) years after the release of the Verve box ... not sure if Membran is bothered by that, but that may explain some differences?

You're no doubt right. DOes the Verve box include the Sonny Criss/Jaws JATP session of 12 Oct 1951, first issued on Pablo?

No - the Verve was out way before that Pablo, I think - and the Verve cuts off in 1949 (adding some 1952 or 1953 bonus - I don't have it at hand, sorry).

That 1951 disc is of course essential!

Oh, sorry, I'm mixing it up ... with the Fats/Hawk date on Pablo (which came out later).

Not sure I have the 1951 one - I'd have loved a second Verve box since all these recordings are such a messy affair. I'm really pretty clueless about what's around from the fifties, and somewhat weary of all the boots popping up in addition to the material previously out on Verve.
