Jazz saxophonist Buddy (4 letters)

and

"_________ Serenades" (1952 jazz album) 8 letters. What the hell is this?!?

Google to the rescue, though Satchmo is only 7 letters.

It's from today's New York Times.

1 across is "_____ serenades" (1952 jazz album), but it's 7 letters, not 8. So it is "Satchmo"

And, of course, 3 down must be Tate.

Looks like it should be seven letters.

LA Times puzzle today "Jazzman Saunders"-- 4 letters?   (I've found the answer but am I the only one who would never get this? )

Spoiler: KING?  I'm sure there are some others here who'd have no problem with the answer, but it does seem awfully out of the ordinary. It's not even an uncommon combination of four letters that it's hard to make a clue for... Is the L.A. Times Sunday puzzle that difficult?!

(Highlight to see--it's white type on white background.)
