Does anybody remember/know when EMI released copy-protected CDs?

EMI utilised "Cactus Data Shield" copy protection (CDS) - 1st commercially produced CDs were released in late 2001

They eventually abandoned this technology in Dec 06

I've only got one of these CDs in my collection (actually a double - The Cookers) kept it for historical interest & was dirt cheap anyway

Post 61 mentions these Blue Note Connoisseurs in late October 2005 which were bought in a Spanish megastore having copy protection:

Booker Ervin - Tex Book Tenor

Ike Quebec - Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions

But not:

Elmo Hope Trio & Quartet

I think Coltrane and Monk live at Carnegie Hall was 'copy-protected', though at the time I put it on my itunes and it is in fact very copy-able

That disc must have been one of the last batch to be released with copy protection.

I stopped buying EU Blue Notes for some 5 years when the scheme was introduced, although I was given Joe Lovano's I'm All For You as a present. It's funny the April Fool's Day thread linked to above should mention that disc, because I found the sound on that particular disc was affected. When listened to on headphones my copy displayed an assortment of tiny digital pops and clicks not part of Motian's drumming. The errors were perfectly reproducible on multiple CD players. Years later I imported a copy of the disc from the US and it had none of these artifacts.

I believe CD:s with a playing time exceeding around 74 minutes were exempted from copy protection as there were not enough room on the disc for the data segment containing compressed audio files.

Thanks for the link. Did a search, but couldn't find the thread. By the way, I don't see that many posters who left the board. Edited by J.A.W.
