Larry Kart Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 In addition to Self's "Inner Play" this is also a very good jazz album. Self's inspiration as an improviser is Art Farmer, and it shows. Quote
Pim Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 These two Sam Rivers records by NoBuisness with Joe Daley are very, very good: https://www.discogs.com/release/16277949-Sam-Rivers-Quartet-Featuring-Joe-Daley-Dave-Holland-Thurman-Barker-Braids https://www.discogs.com/release/14488662-Sam-Rivers-Quintet-Featuring-Joe-Daley-Dave-Holland-Barry-Altschul-Charlie-Persip-Zenith Quote
Gheorghe Posted November 28, 2022 Report Posted November 28, 2022 Well the tuba is not really among the first five instruments I think about when picking up a band for a gig and wouldn´t be in further time, but I think I had heard some tuba in some Mingus workshops, maybe on the TownHall concert or another larger band , maybe "Let´s my Children hear music"......I think there was some tuba also on "Black Saint and Sinner Lady". Dodo Posted December 1, 2022 Report Posted December 1, 2022 A few that come to mind are Wadada Leo Smith's "Golden Hearts Remembrance" which features some beautiful tuba playing in a sort of comping role courtesy of William Roper, Joe Daley's "The Tuba Trio Chronicles," and Bill Cole's albums with The Untempered Ensemble usually feature Joe Daley on tuba or some other low brass as well. My favorite of the Bill Cole albums I've heard are Greenfield Massachusetts 1999, Proverbs for Sam, and Music for Yoruba Proverbs, beautiful free jazz with very prominent use of non-western instrumentation and interplay that resembles Sam Rivers' 70s small group work. clifford_thornton Posted December 7, 2022 Report Posted December 7, 2022 in the free improvisation realm, this one is good: https://www.discogs.com/release/3199135-L-S-F-M-Άδωνις-21101983 with Bernd "Pinguin" Moschner on tuba. Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 There's Arthur Blythe's several recordings with the alto/tuba/cello/guitar/drums band with the aforementioned Bob Stewart. And any number of Brass Bands from New Orleans and elsewhere which feature tuba and/or sousaphones. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 Their FMP is one of the few FMPs I've never owned. I'd probably enjoy it; the cover is great. Quote
