CJ Shearn Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 (edited) That's a shame. He was a very original organist the little I've heard of him but I'm remedying that on Spotify. Edited March 6, 2013 by CJ Shearn Quote
robertoart Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 My first exposure to Organ was through the gentle touch of Mel Rhyne with Wes. It was a great pleasure to explore his later day recordings as well. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Those early Wes records are classics. His work on Criss Cross was consistently enjoyable as well. Another of the old guard gone. RIP. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Damn!!!. RIP Melvin. Thanks for the music you left us. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 I've gotten great enjoyment from hearing Melvin's work. R.I.P. Melvin, you've done good. Quote
sgcim Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 RIP Melvin. You made those Wes recordings the great works of art they are. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Sorry to hear this. RIP. MG Quote
fasstrack Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 If Melvin Rhyne never did anything besides the burnin' solo on The Trick Bag on Boss Guitar it would've been plenty. But he did so much more. I can't imagine the Wes Montgomery Trio w/o Melvin Rhyne. As great a soloist as Wes was Rhyne's shadings, great listening, and perfect swing defined the sound of that group. And he soldiered on, Naptown to Milwaukee, quietly playing his ass off in local scenes. The big names get the glory but to me the Mel Rhynes are the true heroes of jazz. There were very few left of his breed, now one less. RIP. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Saw / heard him a number of times back in the old Milwaukee days. R.I.P. Quote
paul secor Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Thanks for all you gave us and left us, Mr. Rhyne. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Mel Rhyne was one of my favorite organ players. His recordings with Wes and the numerous things he did on Criss Cross are all music I defintely have enjoyed. R.I.P. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Saw / heard him a number of times back in the old Milwaukee days. R.I.P. Me too while I live in Madison. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Sad to hear this; he was one of my dad's favorites. RIP. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 It's no secret that I always loved Mr. Rhyne's playing. What more can I say? I will miss him, and getting a new album every other year. I think there's only one of his more recent CDs that I need to purchase ... it's all good music, and that is quite an achievement. R.I.P. Quote
