Head Man Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 (edited) Seems like DustyGroove are re-issuing this as a 'twofer' in late March. "Two lost smokers from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – both very different than anything else he ever recorded! The Soulful Rebel has a great blend of Hammond and Fender Rhodes along with the vibes – soaring out in a massively funky sextet with bass from Ron Carter and congas from Ray Barretto – both of whom take Johnny's earlier groove into a 70s jazz funk mode! People & Love is even more impressive – and has Lytle's vibes working with sublime larger arrangements – in a style that's like Bobby Hutcherson on mid 70s Blue Note, or Milt Jackson on CTI!" The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 'People and love' is a fantastic album! Worth the price of the twofer. Features Marvin Cabell on ts. Best album Johnny Lytle made. The other album is good but not great. MG Quote
dougcrates Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 When Dusty Groove first posted their wave of Concord releases which also includes the Wayne Henderson produced Allspice and Larry Williams, Ahmed Abdul-Malik's Spellbound was part of the batch. Unfortunately, they removed it after a week. I hope it is still forthcoming and there is no issue with the master tapes. Quote
dougcrates Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 Dusty Groove (in partnership with Real Gone Music) has three more reissues from the Concord vaults scheduled for July 2: Ahmed Abdul Malik - Spellbound, Stan Hunter & Sonny Fortune - Trip On The Strip and George Braith - Musart. To my knowledge, none of these have been on CD before. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 The Stan Hunter is surprisingly good. Quote
felser Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 The Stan Hunter is surprisingly good. What does Sonny Fortune sound like on that one? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 'Trip on the strip' isn't an extraordinary record, but it's likeable. (I've contemplated putting a track in a BFT several times, but it's never made it.) 'Musart' IS an extraordinary album. It's my favourite of Braith's '60s albums. But it's kind of gentle and low key, no fireworks. But, over the years, it's lasted for me. MG Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 The Stan Hunter is surprisingly good. What does Sonny Fortune sound like on that one? Like Sonny Fortune, just less experienced. It's a nice hard bop album. Quote
JSngry Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Got the Lytle set in the mail yesterday & have been listening to it all AM. It's pretty damn good stuff, and Marvin Cabell is just icing on the cake. Quote
Head Man Posted April 23, 2013 Author Report Posted April 23, 2013 Got the Lytle set in the mail yesterday & have been listening to it all AM. It's pretty damn good stuff, and Marvin Cabell is just icing on the cake. Oh dear.....more expense Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 This IS really nice. Got my copy recently. Really SOLID grooves from MILESTONE. I really enjoy both albums. Lytle (pronounced "Little" even by Dusty Groove sales people ) was a hella great vibesman. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 I pronounce it 'Little' in my head. But I know it's supposed to be 'Lyte-ul'. Great album, 'People & love'. Not bad 'Soulful rebel'. I ripped these to a twofer CD years ago. Make a nice package. MG Quote

mikeweil Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Some give the Dusty Groove staff those liner notes where it is written down that Lytle is supposed to rhyme with title ... Quote
mikeweil Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 While we're at Lytle: Has anyone heard this Pacific Jazz album that's due for reissue in late April: Seems like DustyGroove are re-issuing this as a 'twofer' in late March. "Two lost smokers from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – both very different than anything else he ever recorded! The Dusty Groove website says it's "Just sold out"! Quote
mjzee Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Amazon has it as being released on April 30. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 'Done it again' is very nice. 'Swingin' at the Gate' (also on PJ) is even better. Those two would make a good twofer. 'People & love' is THE Lytle album, though. MG Quote
dougcrates Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 Done It Again is very good. It was reissued by Get On Down in a mini-LP sleeve in 2011. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted May 2, 2013 Report Posted May 2, 2013 3 more potentially excellent reissues from DG label scheduled for July 2: Ahmed Abdul-Malik "Spellbound" Goerge Braith - "Musart" Stan Hunter/Sonny Fortune - "Trip on the Strip" I haven't heard any of them but they look great! All from Prestige vault. WAY TO GO DUSTY GROOVE! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 2, 2013 Report Posted May 2, 2013 Don't know 'Spellbound'. 'Trip on the Strip' has one very nice cut, which I was going to use in a BFT one day, but the rest is OK but ordinary. 'Musart' is wonderful! Better than Braith's BNs, in my view, but it took me a long time to realise that. MG Quote
Clunky Posted March 23, 2018 Report Posted March 23, 2018 Thanks to MG’s recommendation in the Vinyl forum, Johnny Lytle The Soulful Rebel/ People & Love just arrived. Very impressed. It’s the first I’ve heard by Lytle and also the first for me on Real Gone Music. Whole package most impressive. Quote
