spangalang Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 I'm going in a few weeks and would like to see some shows but hoping to avoid the tourist traps. I'm also partial to bebop and contemporary, but I'd be interested in hearing some trad too. Any suggestions? Quote
LWayne Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 Snug Harbor and Maple Leaf. Check out their websites for scheduled acts. Enjoy! LWayne Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 17, 2013 Report Posted February 17, 2013 NOLA really isn't the best town to look for the musics you mention. I suggest going with an open mind and explore a bunch of clubs - most with no (or low -$5) covers. Just relax, explore and have a good time. To do this I recommend a night exploring Frenchman Street. jeffcrom Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 What Chuck said. Frenchmen Street is the musical center of the city these days. Lots of trad jazz, played (and danced to) by younger folks, but Snug Harbor usually has more modern stuff. Quote
papsrus Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 Chuck and Jeff have it right. Frenchmen Street. Check out the listings in Offbeat magazine for specific clubs, dates and bands. It's worth stopping in at the Louisiana Music Factory to pick up a CD or two and talk to the guys behind the counter about what's going on. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Enjoyed Leon "Kid Chocolate" Brown in the Royal Sonesta hotel. Quote
