paul secor Posted February 15, 2013 Report Posted February 15, 2013 I was reading a post by Bev where he wrote about "the average listener" and was reminded of a quote attributed to Satchel Paige: "Ain’t no man can avoid being born average, but there ain’t no man got to be common." I looked up Satchel Paige quotes and found some I was familiar with and some I wasn't: "Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching." "Money and women. They're two of the strongest things in the world. The things you do for a woman you wouldn't do for anything else. Same with money." "Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines." "The only change is that baseball has turned Paige from a second class citizen to a second class immortal." "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" "Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don’t move." "If a man can beat you, walk him." "I never rush myself. See, they can't start the game without me." Satch was a wise man. Quote
.:.impossible Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 I see a couple of those all the time. I had no idea he was to be credited for them. Thanks. Quote
paul secor Posted February 16, 2013 Author Report Posted February 16, 2013 I have no idea if he originated all of them, but a couple of web sites give him credit. If Satchell were around today, he might say "Trust the internet at your own risk." Quote
GA Russell Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) "Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you." My dad took me to see Satchel in 1961 when he pitched for the Portland Beavers of the PCL against the Seattle Rainiers. He started and pitched four innings. As I recall, he didn't allow a run. I still remember his body - it was very rubbery! Edited February 16, 2013 by GA Russell Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 I too am grateful that I saw Satch pitch, in an "old-timers" game in Atlanta. I don't remember how he did, but I remember thinking that he sure was cool. I learned this one at the time, long before the internet: "If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts." Quote

I don't want to have to blame a man for whom I otherwise have the highest respect for this wore-out piece of emo blather. Quote

JSngry Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 Well, that one I like, but only when delivered with a knowing adult twinkle and not some babyass wide-eyed wonderment. Quote
TedR Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 In today's paper was this quote about Paige: "In his prime, Paige said he had two overpowering fastballs, one he named 'Long Tommy', which he said had supersonic speed, and the other 'Little Tommy', which he said was merely unhittable. A third pitch was called the 'Bee Ball' because he said 'it would be where I want it to be.'" Quote
