alocispepraluger102 Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 julan priester played an endless variety of styles of music as if he owned them. i would not make that statement about any other musician, living or dead. i hear that he has passed away, but can't confirm it. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 I've heard that he's gone as well via Facebook though nothing official yet. Sad to know this if true - he was a true original. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Enough musicians seem to be posting this that I suspect it is true. He had been waiting on a kidney transplant, no? Quote
king ubu Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Very sad if indeed true. Always loved his tone and phrasing, very voice-like and soft-spoken. Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Ted Gioia has posted Priester's passing on twitter: https://twitter.com/tedgioia/status/300367518118313985 Sad news. Quote
Clunky Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Very sad , a great player whose output was both varied and of the highest quality . RIP Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 He seemed weak when I last saw him - tribute to Von in Chicago a couple of years ago. Nice man and fine musician. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Two greats in the past week. RIP Julian. Thanks for the music. Quote
king ubu Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Ted Gioia has posted Priester's passing on twitter: https://twitter.com/...367518118313985 Sad news. And he has retracted the news: https://twitter.com/tedgioia/ Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 From Julian's page on Facebook I am pleased to say that, yes, any rumors you may have heard of my death have been greatly exaggerated! Thank you all for your concern. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Report Posted February 10, 2013 i've never been so happy to have been so wrong, and such a dumbass. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Phew! My all time favourite trombonist. May he live long and prosper. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Was on a two week tour of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands with him a few years ago, with Mike Reed's expanded People, Places, and Things (Julian, Art Hoyle, and Ari Brown added to the regular lineup of Greg Ward, Tim Haldeman, Jason Roebke, and Mike). Warm, subtle man, and, it goes without saying, one heck of a player. I think we all had a good time, musically and otherwise. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 So glad this isn't the case. I hope things improve for him health-wise. Quote
bertrand Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Let's get rid of this thread! Bertrand. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 I'm actually sort of curious what sparked the original rumor - was there an incident? A scare? Quote
Clunky Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Let's get rid of this thread! Bertrand. Agree Quote

sidewinder Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Very pleased to hear that Mr Priester is with us ! Quote
ValerieB Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 thank goodness for this great news!! as they say, may he live long and prosper!! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Glad he is still with us! I wonder if the Donald Byrd rumors before the confirmation of his death, gave someone the sick idea to say Mr. Priester had also passed. Quote
sonnymax Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) One reason not to delete this thread is that it helps to dispel a rumor that was carelessly spread by the OP. People searching the Internet for news about Priester can see this discussion (or a cached version, even if it is deleted). At least in its present form, they will also see the correction. This is one more reason why members should not post obituaries until they obtain independent verification. Gioia's tweet, or other people merely quoting it, does not constitute independent verification. While I do not question the OP's love for Priester's music, his incredibly frequent habit of creating new threads by merely cut-and-pasting some other source is personally frustrating and in this case, has had a negative impact on the community. I hope this unnecessarily disquieting situation here causes him to rethink this practice. Edited February 10, 2013 by sonnymax Quote

Gioia's tweet, or other people merely quoting it, does not constitute independent verification. You're right. I was the one who posted Gioia's tweet here, but had second thoughts soon afterwards, just because his tweet wasn't verified. It would probably have been better if I had deleted it.
