Milestones
I'm thinking of at least 15 minutes. A jazz tune doesn't even really merit "long" when it's at 10 minutes or so. But I would put on restrictions here. One would be live performances, where tunes are often stretched to twice (or more) their studio length. Another would be jazz suites. For example, A Love Supreme could be considered a suite. Also, I would personally avoid long jams. I know there was a period when Prestige would put out side long jams every now and then. Only a few of these have merit, and very few could be considered genuine classics. I think of tunes that are unusual and complex in structure. Here are some that come to mind:Free Jazz--Ornette (about 36")"Meditations on Integration" (about 24")--Mingus"Bitches Brew" (27")--MilesConcierto de Aranjuez" (about 16")--Miles"African Sunrise" (about 20")--Randy Weston"Search for the new Land" (about 15")--Lee MorganTwo Folk Songs" (about 20")--Pat Metheny Edited February 3, 2013 by Milestones

Sundog
First thing that came to mind was "Orange Was the Color of Her Dress, Then Silk Blue"- Mingus (approx. 18 min.)
Milestones
Yeah, Mingus was one of the great ones is this area. Of course, I've broken my own rule, as all the versions I have heard of "Meditations on Integration" are live. I also like "Parkeriana," which showed up at many of the same concerts (also "Orange"). JazzLover451
Cool thread. Off the top of my head I'll say Idle Moments by Grant Green and the two long tracks on disc 5 of the Miles Davis On the Corner box set (He loved Him Madly is one). Absolutely love those. Morgan's Search for the New Land is awesome, too. Keith Jarrett has too many to mention, but the Cure is pretty good, as is On Green Dolphin Street from Live at the Blue Note. Larry Kart
In addition to several tracks already mentioned, Gil Evans' "La Nevada." Also, though it's only 11 minutes, the Cannonball-Miles "Autumn Leaves."
felser
Another I remembered: Lee Morgan - Capra Black (the premier recording of the Billy Harper classic).

Head Man
Bill Holman's "The Big Street" (16:42), currently available here: Thanks for the heads-up on this release, Bill, I must have missed it when it came out. I presume the two albums included on it are needle-drops, so what does it "sound" like?

The Magnificent Goldberg
I know there was a period when Prestige would put out side long jams every now and then. Only a few of these have merit, and very few could be considered genuine classics. NONSENSE I agree - in any case the thread is asking for favourites, not classics. So: Twilight - Fred Anderson - 16:37 Strut time - Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake - 21:16 All day long - Kenny Burrell - 18:03 (and that one IS a classic!) A night in Tunisia - Johnny Griffin - 17:05 Marchin' along - Tiny Grimes & Coleman Hawkins - 17:37 Hip cake walk - Don Patterson - 16:31 (another classic) Muse blues - Don Patterson - 17:55 The creator has a master plan - Pharoah Sanders - probably 30:00 + (no accurate time on my LP) Black unity - Pharoah Sanders - 37:19 Drag 'em out - Shirley Scott - 16:08 Au privave - Jimmy Smith - 15:09 Just friends - Jimmy Smith - 15:15 The sermon - Jimmy Smith - 20:10 Stand - Dr Lonnie Smith - 17:20 Trouble man - Grover Washington Jr - 15:55 MG
