brownie Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 I was not aware of Haden's health problems... Article in The Chicago Tribune http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/ct-ent-0130-jazz-charlie-haden-20130130,0,2439631.column Quote
king ubu Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 Gee, my best wishes to Mr. Haden, love his music! Quote
six string Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 All I knew about his health was his tinnitus issues. One of the shows I saw, I believe it was with Nocturne, he played behind a plexiglass baffle but didn't know about the polio. What a shame. He's one of my favorite bass players. Some have not cared much for his mellowing in old age but I love his slow albums in the duet format. It allows me to appreciate his wonderful tone and choice of notes a little more than the louder, faster material of his younger days. There are few people who have completely mastered that balance of melody and rhythm on the acoustic bass so every album I listen to is like a master class in the instrument. Hell, some other instrumentalists would kill for some of his mojo. I hope he recovers enough soon to get back out there but playing music at home with recordings is a good way to keep the chops and the mind tuned up themselves. Quote

JSngry Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 The Trib article is behind some digital firewall which, if crackable, requires more effort than I care to expend to negotiate. I don't feel like "signing up" for something I have no use for other than, probably this once or twice per year. So, what's wrong with Charlie? Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 quoting the tribune article----------------- charlie can't eat solid food, has trouble swallowing and can barely talk. These symptoms, and others, have been caused by the onset of post-polio syndrome at the end of 2010, and they have dramatically altered Haden's life – and denied the rest of us the pleasure of basking in the warm glow of his music live. CJ Shearn Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 Best wishes and prayers to him! Quote

soulpope Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 Very saddening news. Will always be one of my faves, especially due to his Artist House duo outing with Hampton Hawes aptly titled "As long there is Music". Quote

Absolutely my friend! But thanks for making sure. I'd hate to miss an album like that. I have most of Haden's piano duets. Quote
Adam Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 Same article (I presume) in the LA Times today, but I can't locate it yet in their online edition. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 Sad to hear. I interviewed him years ago and it was a treat. Even if his more recent music isn't my cuppa, he's done so much great work over the years. Wish that Trib article didn't have so many firewalls! Quote
