JazzLover451 Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) I admit that I'm coming late to Charles Lloyd, having listened to only a little bit of him through the Chico Hamilton stuff he did in the early sixties. I'm most impressed by his recordings that seem to lend themselves to long bouts of meditation, but I have no idea which of his albums work the most strongly in that vein. Any suggestions? Appreciated in advance. Edited January 27, 2013 by JazzLover451 Quote
niels Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 Albumwise it would be Sangam (although more world music than jazz) and Canto for me. And songwise it would be Tagi, the albumcloser of the magnificent "Mirror" album Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 Assuming "meditative" is the #1 goal, Fish Out of Water, Notes from Big Sur, The Call, Canto and The Water Is Wide all fit the bill. Maybe Sangam too. Quote
Patrick Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 Notes from Big Sur and The Water is Wide definitely fit this category. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 "Sangam" is such a great album, too bad it's packed away Quote
BFrank Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 There's the tune "TM" on the 'Waves' album (does that count?) Quote
JETman Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 There's the tune "TM" on the 'Waves' album (does that count?) Is that the one with Beach Boys on it? Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 (edited) Here are two. "Fish Out of Water" and "Autumn in New York." Edited February 1, 2013 by Hardbopjazz Quote
JazzLover451 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Report Posted February 1, 2013 Thanks for the advice, folks. Rest assured I'll be taking in all these choices soon enough. Quote

medjuck Posted February 3, 2013 Report Posted February 3, 2013 I'll second Sangam. Me too. It was recorded at a small theater about ten minutes from my home. Like a fool I never went because I had heard Loyd there the year before and though I liked the concert didn't feel a need to see him again so soon since he plays here pretty well every year (he lives nearby too). My greatest "missed concert" since I skipped seeing Bill Evans at McGill in 1962 because I had an exam the next day. It was one of the first concerts he gave after the death of Scott LaFaro and my roommate said it was amazing. I failed the exam too. Learned my lesson though, Duke Ellington played Montreal the night before an exam a couple of years later and I went. it was great and did ok in the exam too. Quote
Milestones Posted February 3, 2013 Report Posted February 3, 2013 "Tagi" is an interesting piece, but it's not on my copy of Mirror. Quote
